Perhaps the first thing is to get the name right.

There is nothing purple in Ziwei, as there is nothing black in Heidian (an inn run by brigands), nothing red in Hongli (bonus), nothing white in Baizhi (wrongly written words), nothing green in Qinglou (a brothel), etc.

The term Purple Star must had been created by someone who has only superficial knowledge of the Chinese language, or it was a term of convenience when some non-Chinese speakers first got to know Ziwei Doushu.

So, what should be the proper name if it is wrong to be called the Purple Star Astrology?

The school of thought which advocates that Ziwei Doushu was developed from astronomy refer Ziwei to Polaris. Though actually the stars in Ziwei Doushu are merely fictitious symbols, this does reflect that Ziwei is the most important star among them. Thus one can take that Ziwei means the centre of focus, the reference point, the commander, the Emperor!

Ziwei is the personification of the ultimate power. Coupling with the fact that ZWDS had become the exclusive instrument of designated astronomers in the imperial court for serving the purpose of emperors, I have chosen to call it Emperor Astrology.

Or you can just leave it as Ziwei Doushu.

It is awful to paint it with the colour purple.

There are only two openly published ancient scriptures for Ziwei Doushu.


The first is 紫微斗数全集 Ziwei Doushu Quanji - the Complete Compilation of Ziwei Doushu. It describes the original teaching.

The other is 紫微斗数全书 Ziwei Doushu Quanshu - the Complete Book of Ziwei Doushu. There are errors and contradictions in this book, the most obvious being the teaching of a different way to begin 10-year cycles, called Dayun.

But there exist also unpublished texts called 口诀 Koujue, which are verbal instructions in rhyme, passed on separately in different schools from teachers to disciples. Their existence is due to the secretive nature in teaching in the old days, and they vary from one school to another, perhaps the result of different emphases on the principles and applications, enriched with personal inspirations and testimonies from different teachers.

There are only several schools in Ziwei Doushu, but the number can be considered one too many when there was only one original teaching. However, this is quite an acceptable phenomenon since teaching was not done in an open, systematic and orderly manner in the old days, and printing was not as refined, both lead to minor differences being created along the way.

Ziwei Doushu, or what I call Emperor Astrology, came up from nowhere in the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127). Literally nowhere.

How was it so?

First of all, neither has its essence related much to Yijing concepts, nor its method of calculations based much on Yin-Yang and Five Elements like the Ziping method (Sizhu Bazi), and other traditional methodologies of Chinese metaphysics.

Even the so called STARS in Ziwei Doushu are merely fictitious symbols, some adopted from Buddhist translations, such as Wuqu, Lianzhen, Tanlang, etc.

Some believe that Ziwei Doushu has a connection with the Verdic Astrology as the chart (Mingpan) of 12 houses (Shi-er Gong) has identical structure with that used in Verdic Astrology. However, the structure of the chart is apparently the only connection, as Verdic Astrology is based on real constellations while Ziwei Doushu is not.

Some have credited its invention to Yi and Dao masters Chen Xiyi (Chen Tuan) and Shao Kangjie (Shao Yong) of Song Dynasty but this lacks credit too. None of the dozens of formal biographies/records of these masters has ever mentioned anything about Ziwei Doushu, not even those written by the son of Shao Kangjie, Shao Bowen.

Some others think that it has developed from Shiba Feixing (the Eighteen Flying Stars) but this also appears to be a little far fetched under close examinations. The only two connections they have are the use of the name Ziwei for the main star in both methods, and that both are recorded in Daozang, a compilation of Daoist scriptures. As the name implies, Shiba Feixing only employs 18 stars in addition to Ziwei, where Ziwei Doushu employs more than a hundred. The stars other than Ziwei are all different, too. But mainly, Shiba Feixing only offers a static chart and Ziwei Doushu provides an additional five levels of dynamic charts on top of the basic chart.

It will perhaps remain a mystery forever, as to whom had created this complex methodology of destiny analysis. However, it may not be difficult to agree that it has to be inspired by Heaven or a higher force, for it is impossible for humankind to create such a methodology of complexity without a computer working on at least thousands of input.
