Synopsis
The legend of how each man and woman of Yang family had served and defended their country was brought to the screen many times before. This drama is a light-hearted rendition of their earlier days when most of them were not yet soldiers. It focused on how their parents, their enemies, and the women they loved shaped their characters, influenced their lives, and motivated them to greatness.

Yang Wu Lang - He was skilled in the art of war but clumsy in the art of love. He had easily defeated Yelu Xie on the battlefield. Yet, he seemed to be always losing when it came to fighting for Guan Hong's heart.

Yang Liu Lang - Before he was the leader of his clan, he was a boy who didn't want to grow up. His propensity for troublemaking led him to a chance encounter with Princess Chai. Together, they digged up a decades-old Royal scandal that layed the foundation for a fallout between his clan and the emperor.

Yang Qi Lang - As the youngest son of the family, he brought much laughter to his parents and siblings. His admiration and respect for Yang Si Lang smoothed the way for his brother's homecoming.

Yang Si Lang - He was separated from his family as a child. When he returned as a young man, he had many cruel words for his family who had abandoned him on the battlefield. However, his desire to be part of the family motivated him to join the army and serve beside his father.

杨家将是一部英雄传奇系列故事，以话本、戏剧等形式在中国民间广为流传。它对北宋前期的一些人物和事件加以 演义，讲述了杨家四代人戍守北疆、精忠报国的动人事迹。

《宋史》对杨家着墨不多。

杨业原是北汉名将，官至建雄军节度使，骁勇善战，国人号为“无敌”。北汉降宋，杨业得到宋太宗赵光义信任， 继续戍边防备契丹。他曾在雁门以奇兵数千骑大败契丹，自此令契丹望风而遁，但也受到上级猜忌。986年（宋 太宗雍熙三年），宋军北伐，潘美一路，杨业副之，克云、应、寰、朔四州。曹彬军败绩，潘美、杨业所部护送四 州民众内迁。途中遭遇契丹主力，潘美等强令杨业出战。杨业率部血战陈家谷，其子杨延玉战死，杨业为契丹所擒 ，绝食三日而死。

在杨业的儿子中，以杨延昭最为出色，杨业说：“此儿类我。”杨延昭本名杨延朗，在边防二十餘年，契丹颇为忌 惮，目为杨六郎。1004年（宋真宗景德元年），辽军深入宋境，杨延昭率部突入辽境，击破古城 。

杨延昭有三子，《宋史》僅載第三位楊將文廣之事跡。延昭長子傳永，次子德政，名字獨見於曾鞏《隆平集》。杨 延昭的第三子杨文广，字仲容，青年時代得到范仲淹的赏识，置于麾下；曾从狄青南征。杨文广在西边防御西夏， 而不忘燕云。辽宋争代州地界，杨文广未即献上阵图及进取幽燕的方略，就去世了。

杨家将系列故事经历了长期的发展与丰富，历代民间艺人和广大的人民群众参与到创作中来，不断加入新的元素， 并且这个过程还将持续下去。兹就已经成熟定型的主题内容简要综述。

故事一般从呼延赞的身世切入。呼延家与杨家有若干的联系，所以评书也有说呼或曰呼延家将的。整个故事始终伴 随着朝廷的忠奸斗争，支持、保护杨家的重臣先后有八贤王、寇准、包拯等人，而压制、迫害杨家的先后有潘仁美 、王钦若等。

杨继业（杨令公）娶妻佘赛花（佘太君），生七子二女：大郎杨渊平（延平）、二郎杨延定、三郎杨延光、四郎杨 延辉、五郎杨延德、六郎杨延昭、七郎杨延嗣，还有义子八郎延顺，号称“七郎八虎”；二女是八姐和九妹。金沙 滩一战，为保宋帝，大郎、二郎、三郎战死。四郎被俘，化名木易，被招为辽驸马，才有后来的四郎探母；有些评 话版本中，八郎流落北边，后也被招为驸马。五郎杀出重围，去五台山出家为僧。今有京剧名段《金沙滩》及《四 郎探母》。

因潘仁美设计陷害，杨令公兵困两狼山。七郎突围求救，被潘仁美乱箭射死。救兵不至，老令公撞死在李陵碑。京 剧有名段《李陵碑》。

杨六郎延昭娶妻柴郡主，生子杨宗保，麾下有孟良、焦赞。演义与正史最显著的差异，是在杨延昭、杨文广父子之 间，插入杨宗保、穆桂英一段，这样杨延昭和杨文广就成了祖孙关系。为破天门阵，孟良上五台山请来五郎，五和 尚说要降龙木作斧柄。杨宗保去穆柯寨寻降龙木，邂逅穆桂英，经若干曲折，二人终成眷属。于是，穆桂英大破天 门阵，杨五郎阵斩萧天佐。

杨宗保和穆桂英有女杨金花、子杨文广。但杨六郎死后，杨家已然男丁凋零；然而西夏犯边，这才有十二寡妇征西 。杨门女将也很厉害，特别值得一提的是烧火丫头杨排风，使一根烧火棍，尤胜须眉，深得佘太君喜 爱。

杨家将系列故事传唱不衰，有的文本甚至演出九代或十代，但比较有影响、情节充实而精彩的主要还是集中在令公 、六郎、宗保、文广四代。《水浒》中的杨志和《说岳》里的杨再兴，据说都是杨家将的后人。

The battle of Jinshatan was said to be cursed because the shooting of this scene was constantly plagued by wicked weather. Whenever they shot for this scene, it always rained. Names #1: The sons in the Yang family are known as "Lang" (literally, "man") and their wives are know as "Niang" (woman). The youngest daughter is known as "Mei" (younger sister). They are named numerically starting with "Da" as the biggest/oldest, then "Er" (two), "San" (three}, "Si" (four), "Wu" (five), "Liu" (six), "Qi" (seven), and finally "Ba" (eight). So when they called out "Yang Qi Lang" you know they are referring to the seventh son from the Yang family.
Names #2: Historically, a woman of good upbringing would never reveal her first name to non-family members. For an unrelated male to know her first name was an indication of a very intimate relationship, such as a fiancé. After she had gotten married, her first name would be dropped entirely. Instead, she would take on her husband's name. Take for example Luo. She is introduced as 罗氏女 (Luo Shi Nu). However, "Shi Nu" is not her first name. It refers to "the woman of the last name Luo." After she marries Yang Si Lang, she takes on his name and becomes better known as "Yang Si Niang." (Chinese equivalent of "Mrs. John Smith.")
Names #3: The Yang mother, father didn't name their kids one through eight because they wanted to save themselves a few brain cells. The kids are just more commonly known as such to the outsiders. Their official names are used in the show. In a meeting with the Emperor, Yang Wu Lang and Yang Liu Lang are called forth by the name 杨延德 (Yang Yan De) and 杨延昭 (Yang Yan Zhao), respectively. Other Yang brothers' official names are mention during their boot camp training.

Costume: The show's costume is one of it's main focal points. For it's premier, it hosted a runway event where the actors and actresses showcased the show's costumes. The Yang family and Yelu Xie's costumes are based on historical Tang, Song, and Liao fashion. Guan Hong's costume takes it's inspiration from Tibetan culture. However, it is the show's military outfit that had garnered the most attention and controversy. Many of the viewers from China found the Yang family's military armor resembled too much of Japanese Samurai armor than historical Song armor with it's bright red and black coloring and long, narrow plates.
