THEY got their year-end bonus - from a canal. On Tuesday, Sungei Kadut canal was teeming with big fish at about noon.
Foreign workers living in the industrial estate were ecstatic - this was their chance for some free, and fresh, food.
There were at least 50 huge fish - grass carps and song yu.
Most were more than 0.8m long, about twice the length of this newspaper, and weighed between 30kg and 40kg.
TOOK 2 MEN TO CARRY
Each fish had to be carried by two to three men.
It was a rare find for the usually quiet industrial estate, and on a public holiday, few workers were present.
But those who were about soon began looking for nets or anything else which could help them catch the fish.
Ms Kate Yong, 30, who was working that day, rushed out with a colleague to find out what the commotion was about.
The retail executive told The New Paper that she had seen people catching small fish from the canal before but had never seen such big fish.
Ms Yong quickly whipped out her digital camera and took some shots.
'It's not every day that you witness such a sight,' she said in Mandarin.
Shin Min Daily News reported some workers barbecuing a fish on the spot as they didn't want to take it back to their hostels.
But it was so big that there was still a lot left over even after four of them had had a hearty meal.
Ms Yong said: 'When I left at about 6pm, the workers were talking about cooking a fish head curry feast for dinner.
'The fishes were probably their unexpected, post-New Year's Day present.'
She noticed that the water level in the canal appeared to be higher than normal but was not sure if it had anything to do with the appearance of the big fish.
So where did they come from?
No one seemed to know.
Some speculated that they could have swum downstream from the flood waters in Johor.
Also heavy rains over the last three weeks could have led to some ponds or fish farms overflowing, which could go some way in explaining this surprise find.
