Default World’s largest moth at Toa Payoh

18-year-old student, Melody Tan couldn't believe her eyes when she spotted this huge moth at Block 236 Toa Payoh Lorong 1 on 5 April.

It was resting on a pipe just outside her flat.
Ever curious, the first thing Melody did was to 'Wiki' it and the Wikipedia article identified the moth as the Attacus Atlas Moth - the world's largest moth.

It's simply referred to as the Atlas Moth.

Cherish every moments every secs.

from wikipedia:

The Atlas moth (Attacus atlas) is a large saturniid moth found in the tropical and subtropical forests of Southeast Asia, southern China, common across the Malay archipelago to Indonesia. In India, Atlas moths are cultivated for their silk in a non-commercial capacity; unlike that produced by the related Silkworm moth (Bombyx mori), Atlas moth silk is secreted as broken strands. This brown, wool-like silk is thought to have greater durability and is known as "fagara." Atlas moth cocoons have been employed as purses in Taiwan.

Atlas moths are considered to be the largest moths in the world in terms of total wing surface area (upwards of c. 400 square cm or 65 square inches). Their wingspans are also amongst the largest, from 25-30 cm (10-12 inches). Females are appreciably larger and heavier. (The largest lepidopteran in terms of wingspan is thought to be the White Witch Thysania agrippina.) Atlas moths are said to be named after either the Titan of Greek mythology, or their map-like wing patterns. In Hong Kong the Cantonese name translates as "snake's head moth", referring to apical extension of the forewing, which bears a passing resemblance to a snake's head.

lol, a wingspan of a foot, i'd be stunned if I were to encounter it

If you think the Toa Payoh giant moth is big, mine's even bigger!

That's how STOMPer Dan felt as he shared about the Atlas Moth at his brother-in-law's home.

According to him, it's definitely bigger-sized.

His brother-in-law, Francis (below) lives at Block 8 Lakepoint Drive in Jurong.

Dan who took this picture on Saturday (7 Apr) added that the moth visits only during certain times of the year.

"I've seen the moth, and it looks really big. My brother also mentioned that the moth only appears in his home during Ching Ming and the seventh lunar month. I find it very strange," he told STOMP.

STOMP then contacted his brother's home, and managed to get more information about the moth from Amanda, Dan's niece.

The 18-year-old student told STOMP, "The moth measures about 2 palm-width from in length, and slightly more than that across. Once it actually rested on my face, and I thought it was a bird because it was so big!"

Amanda also finds it strange that the moth only seems to visit during certain times of the year. "My mother doesn't allow us to chase it away as she guesses that it could be the spirit of our ancestors. That's why we don't try to chase it away as a sign of respect."

She added that she would most probably be terrified of it, had it been another ordinary moth.

seen before also but also seen during some period of time

to fall in love is always easy
to start a relationship is always simple
to build it, is always tough
to maintain it, is 'better said than done'
to break off, is 'easier said than done'
to remain friends after u broke off, is never possible
to forget the memories is 'always doing but never succeeding'
to heal the pain within is hard and tough and never near simple
but one has to try to heal your own heart...
