JERUSALEM: Renowned British scientist Sir Isaac Newton, is known as the father of modern physics and astronomy, but he also came up with the odd crackpot theory, a 1704 letter suggests.

In the letter, which went on show at a Jerusalem exhibition yesterday, he used biblical scriptures to predict the world would end in 2060.

Newton was a famed rationalist, and went as far as securing a royal exemption from ordination in the Church of England - which was normally expected of academics of his day - so he would not have to follow its teachings. Nonetheless, Newton based his prediction on the Bible.

Working from verses in the Book of Daniel, the elaborator of the classical laws of gravity, motion and optics argued that the world would end 1,260 years after the foundation of the Holy Roman Empire in western Europe in 800 AD.

Interest in superstitions

The letter, on show at Jerusalem's Hebrew University, in Israel, as part of an exhibition entitled "Newton's Secrets", is part of an array of papers of the British scientist bequeathed to the institution by a wealthy collector of scientific manuscripts.

The university said it was the first time the letter had been put on public show since 1969.

Newton's late 17th century work, at Cambridge University in England, was the foundation stone of modern science until the discovery of relativity and quantum mechanics in the last century.

But it has long been known that the ground-breaking physicist also took a keen interest in superstitions of his day that have long since fallen foul of modern science.

Newton spent four years in the 1670s preparing a work on alchemy, the notion that base metals can be turned into gold.

As for whether it's likely Newton's prediction will come true; we'll have to wait another 53 years to find out.

Now got so many predictions by other scientist saying Earth will end at 20** but none of them ever come true.. the scientist really wan the Earth to come to an end meh

Hmm, personally i dont think this world will end in this age. But i am quite certain there will be some war going out in this millenium, where many lives will be lost. It will be a point of state as though the whole world is going to end. However, it will eventually end, and we will have our normal lives again. Trust me, the world will never end so soon.

To buddhist and hinduism: our current age is call the kali yuga, and it is definately not the last yuga. Even if the world is destroyed in kali yuga, another yuga will arrived and the world will be back again.

To Abrahamic religions: Think about it, god spent so much effort creating this wonderful world of ours.. How will he possibly let the world end in just a good few billion years? If i were god i would think its such a waste.

HOWEVER, if the world really ends like what it is said as above, then we cannot blame anyone. It is our doings. Humans have polluted nature and go against it by all means. Isnt that a price that human should pay?

Actually i think if Earth really suffered a major crisis, humanity would not actually end as scientist will find ways to preserve humanity.. Whereas for the other species like the plants or the animals, they will actually go through another evolution and adapt to the 'new' world just like what the Dinosaurs had gone through..

the only way earth is gonna end its life in the near future if there's an unsuspecting asteroid heading our way undetected. Other than thay, its all bull. come on la, maybe these people should focus more on the problems earth is facing now rather than finding means and ways to get the date where the world is going to end.

Well if the world is really going to end by 2060, we can still make change to it. Our doings can change the fate. Saving the world from deforesations, pollution etc and we might be able to live a few more decades after 2060. Also, try looking at yourself as imperment. Think about it. If every living being is going to disappear one day, how could these bodies be ours?

No matter whether the world will end or not,we will still eventually dies.
So why not spends every minutes and seconds usefully and don bother about when it will be the end.
If you keep on think tomorrow will be the end of the worlds,then you will not live peacefully today and worrying.

Think about it this way. Let's stick a telescope onto your eye, and close your other eye. You can see me throwing a rock at you from far away, but ONLY if you're looking at the right direction. Even if you have 10 people with 10 telescopes stuck to their eyes, they won't be able to track everything.
