WASHINGTON -- An advisory panel to the Food and Drug Administration is recommending approval of a new method of sterilization for women.

It would offer another option to the procedure known as tubal ligation.

The new method. called Adiana, takes about 15 minutes to complete and involves using radio signals to create a lesion inside the fallopian tube. Soft material smaller than a single grain of rice is placed at the spot. It attracts healty tissue, which creates a permanent blockage.

The patient can typically go back to work within a day.

The procedure is not 100-percent effective. During a clinical trial, 570 women were told they could rely on it. But during the following 15 months, 11 of them got pregnant.
