Sales executive Darren Chan, 37, alerted STOMP about his neighbour, Madam Lim, 71. Her dog was knocked down by a driver in the early hours of the morning on 16 October.
Whilst Madam Lim was taking her daily walk with her two dogs accompanied by her maid, a van ran into one of her canine companions, Pepsi. Madam Lim's maid quickly carried the hurt animal to the side of the road, after which the driver drove off.
The dog was then sent to Mount Pleasant Animal Hospital, where it died the next day.
Madam Lim's maid remembered the licence plate number of the van, and they were able to trace the owner.
A distraught Madam Lim reported the case to the police, but was referred to the Traffic Police, who in turn told her that the driver would only be fined $200 for the hit-and-run case, but because no human lives were lost, no other action would be taken against the driver.
Pepsi's hospital bill came up to more than $1 000, of which Madam Lim paid $600 from her own savings, and is still paying off the sum by monthly instalments.
When interviewed, Madam Lim, who lives alone with her maid and her only dog now, broke down, and told STOMP that "nothing can ever be done to bring back the life of her beloved friend."
Darren wonders if anyone can help with this case.
