I heard during the olden days (17-19 centuries?) in european countries, "witches" are burnt to dead alive as they were thought to be evil. Is this a true story? Do the "witches" and "Wizards" really practise magic and stuff or issit pure superstition?

I believe those that u heard in Europe are the Witchtrials/Witchhunts. NOt just in Europe but in US a little town called Salem also have such Witch Hunts.

I have read some documents on those hunts. There were no concrete evidences that those people who were persecuted were real witches/wizards. It all started with a group of young girls playing a game with their maid in Salem. Later one of those girls fell ill and the villagers, being superstitious, asked the girl and realized that they had been playing with the maid -they believed were voodoo or spells. Then for some reasons, the other girls also started having fits and ills. Then the villagers really believed that the maid was worshipping devil and started to hunt for the other 'witches' using those girls.

It could be due to superstitions and those young girls' hunger for attention so they were more than willing to pick out the socalled witches (usually people who are not from their town or they dislike or rich). In those times, people were willing to believe anything that could explain the uncertainties or mysteries - hence the idea that those unexplained illnesses were caused by witches -servants of devil and must be hanged or burnt at stakes.

Whether witches/wizards exist now, depends on how u define witches/wizards. If u define them as those people like in Charmed -can freeze time, throw fireballs, then i'm sorry such witches and wizards most likely don't exist. If u define them as people who believe in the old ways, spells and nature, then yes there are such witches in the world - in western countries mostly esp USA. But those witches/wizards don't flaunt their identities too obvious as they do still fear of persecution as there are those narrow minded people around.

In singapore, i believe witches/wizards are very rare or they are closeted kind. Local society is still not accepting of this sort of mystical stuffs as could be seen in the reactions of the parents when singapore 1st sold Harry Potter series.

singapore has may ppl do witchcraft as well. like wad Artemis86 says.. not everyone will identify themself in fear of prosticution but for me, i dont do black magik so i have nth to fear for. actually, singapore have grps of ppl doing this things tgt.. i for one dont think theres any wrong with doing witchcraft. its a form of spirtual art and also a form of worshipping mother nature

I thought witch hunts was sparked off by some evil christians' scheme to wipe off the pagans? Like dunno ages ago, they scare pagans will hold too much authority or power over the beliefs of villagers, so they started to spread rumors and eventually hunt them out. I always thought that the pagans are similar to druids, close to nature one, so easier to accuse them. =x
