Default Why are there so many unemployed U grads?

I know because my husband hires staff for his company and every time there is an opening, he gets an average of 50 applicants who are U grads, out of which 50% have no working experience. Mind you, the openings are NOT middle management or senior management posts too! :surprised:

My girlfriend who is a co-partner of her company also shared with me her amazement at the numbers of U grads who have not got jobs when she interviewed applicants.

Is this a growing trend? Does it mean that even with a degree, one is never guaranteed of finding employment?

Even if a U grad does not mind a low-paying job, most organizations will most probably bypass their applications as their being overqualified. It is ridiculous, is it not, for companies to hire a receptionist/admin. assistant who is even more educated than the Supervisor? Furthermore, most parents will not want their degree holder children to do such jobs....

With so much emphasis being placed on education by our government what chance have U grads have of getting employment?

:confused2:

A degree is afterall, just a degree.

The govt. can only push for a higher quality of education system and emphasize on higher education qualification. Ultimately, if you graduate from the university or polytechnic with a trapped mindset that the world revolves around you, then you are a goner!

You have a point there, DjChris but would u say parents are to be blamed too? There are so many parents who push their children to excel, to be better than the best in academic studies. I feel the aspirations are more for the parents than for their children. You see a lot of so-called nerds whose lives revolve around books and nothing else. Sad....

I wouldn't say the parents are to be blamed.

They were brought up in the 70s-80s with the mindset of studying hard and securing a good job. That mindset probably worked in the 70s-80s although it pretty much fails in the current context. While we can't expect the parent's mindset to change overnight, we can only hope for schools to evolve from traditional teachings to more conventional teachings and let the younger generation learn to be more creative, think out of the box, and explore unchartered territories.

i heard an advice from my cousin who is currently working now. she said tt during ur uni days, its best if u go on work attachment, n compile ur portfolio. in this way, after u graduate, u can go for interviews n show the companies tt "hey i have some experience" n they'll more likely give u the job.

Its all about luck too. Getting a job does kind of depends on your luck. I do not have a degree. Been able to get a job so far. :biggrin4:

For parents to think that education can bring their children to better paid jobs is not wrong. They just want to have the best for their children. However, I guess that most U grads will not settle for a job that pays less than $1500. Thus, it could be partly the reason why so many are still unemployed.

i agree with u. even now, young parents still think tt paper qualifications are important, mainly because we ourselves know that no matter wad, ppl still look at ur certs to determine how well u are. of coz, it won't hurt if u are an all-rounder, as this gives u a slight advantage over others.

luck does play a role, but in a long term basis, ur work performance is still important. most graduates believe that they deserve higher pay, because of their qualifications, thus they may reject those jobs which pay them lower. my opinion is: grab any job that comes along, because u won't be lucky so often. work from there, gain experience, n u can change jobs after tt if u still wish to. the main point is: u need experience. ppl will then be more impressed n find u reliable.

Being able to get into internship or start off as a graduate trainee would be the ideal situation for a fresh grad.

Otherwise, you can always start off by creating your very own portfolio. When I applied for my current web-related marketing position, I brought along my laptop to demostrate web portals and works that I have done on a non-profit initiative. Meaning I did those stuff for fun and nobody hired me to do them. Fortunately, they offered me the job with a slightly higher paycheck.

Fundamentally, as long as you can share with the interviewer that you have knowledge in the position you are applying for, and that you will definitely add value to the company, you will be employed.

Agreed. However, there are many employers who will be there to exploit their staff. Pay very little yet expect alot from you, since you need to gain that experience.
