Wanted: Trishaw riders for tourism As far as careers in the booming tourism industry go, "trishaw rider" does not quite ring a bell. But yesterday, 20 such positions were offered at a job fair aimed at exposing heartlanders to opportunities in tourism.
.
With a shortage of trishaw riders — due to the job's irregular income and long hours — tourism transport operator Singapore Explorer turned to the fair to fill the vacancies.
.
Mr Jackson Loh, a supervisor with the company, said the job turned out to be a draw for applicants aged 40 to 50 years old.
.
The job fair organised by the North West Community Development Council was the first to target the tourism industry. About 1,500 job seekers turned up for the 800 jobs — such as bartenders, travel consultants and coach drivers — up for grabs.
.
It was an "opportune time" to hold the fair, said Mr Christopher de Souza, an adviser to Ulu Pandan grassroots organisations. With the Integrated Resorts due for completion in 2009, there would be knock-on effect on jobs across the island.
.
Former security guard Seah Boon Teong, for one, had gone for three months without a job when he decided to try his luck in the tourism sector.
.
The 36-year-old, an A-level holder, is considering a career as a tour guide. His cousin had assured him that it was a stable profession with a prospective monthly salary of over $2,000. He also applied to be a hotel waiter. — Additional reporting by Gracia Chiang.
