RACKED BY GUILT FOR BUYING BOY BIKE, DAD SAYS:
I WANTED HIM TO BE INDEPENDENT
IN A cruel twist of fate, a 10-year-old boy is fighting for his life after being knocked down at the spot where his father had an accident eight years ago.
Then, Mr Berwin See, 46, was involved in a minor collision with another motorist at the T-junction of Toa Payoh Lor 1A and Lor 2. Nobody was injured.
On Friday night, his son, Jiao Jie, was cycling home from tuition when he was hit by a taxi at the same junction.
The junction is just 500m away from his home at Blk 101B Toa Payoh Lor 2.
Jiao Jie is now in a coma from severe head injuries.
Mr See told The New Paper on Sunday: 'I had a shock when my wife called to inform about the accident and the location.
'I couldn't believe my eyes when I reached the T-junction and saw my son's bicycle lying on the same spot my car had been hit before.'
Mr See, a creative director who has won more than 30 awards for his logo designs, has been called the 'Logo King' by Lianhe Zaobao.
He had bought the bicycle for Jiao Jie as a birthday gift and Jiao Jie had started riding it to his tuition class at Toa Payoh Lor 4, almost a kilometre from his home, in November.
He would cycle to the classes twice a week.
Mr See feels guilty for allowing his son to ride the bicycle to and from the classes.
DIFFERENT ROUTE
'I wanted to train him to be independent. We had all guided him on the safest and shortest route to ride home.
'Unfortunately, he had taken a longer way home yesterday evening,' he said.
The accident left Jiao Jie with a broken leg, a swollen, bleeding brain and ears.
The doctors told Mr See yesterday that Jiao Jie's injuries were so severe that even if he regains consciousness, his brain could be permanently damaged.
At 2.30am yesterday, Jiao Jie underwent a three-hour long operation.
But the situation is far from optimistic.
Mr See said: 'At 5.30pm this afternoon, the doctor told me to prepare for the worst.
'They said Jiao Jie has at most another three days. It is not likely that he can get out of his coma.'
But Mr See refuses to give up hope.
'I am praying for a miracle. I hope that everyone can help me pray for my son.'
Mr See, his wife and their two other children have been keeping vigil at the reception area of the intensive care unit at the KK Women's and Children's Hospital since Friday.
Jiao Jie's elder brother, Jiao Kai, 12, understands that his brother may never wake from his coma, and that he may die within a week.
Yet, he refuses to give up hope.
'I am going to tell him I love him. I have never told him that, and I am also going to give him a hug.'
BROTHER'S HORROR
Jiao Kai was the one who informed his mother when he had gone looking for his brother on Friday at 9.30pm after Jiao Jie failed to return from a tuition class which ended an hour earlier.
His mother had sent him and their maid to look for Jiao Jie.
But what they found was the wreck of his brother's bicycle lying near a pool of blood on the road.
Mr See has contacted the brother of a friend who is a neurosurgeon, hoping that he can save his son.
The neurosurgeon is in Egypt, but Mr See hopes that he will return to Singapore within the next three days.
'I know that the possibilities of my son living on are slim, but I still want to try. The neurosurgeon is my last hope,' he said.

MAID AND BROTHER MAKE TERRIBLE FIND
IT was a chilling discovery for the maid and See Jiao Kai, 12.
Ms Tini Kustini, 25, an Indonesian, said: 'I felt my insides go soft when I saw the bicycle and the blood. I knew something must have happened to Jiao Jie.
'I started to cry when I saw one of his black slippers on the road.'
She had been working for the See family for about three years and was fond of Jiao Jie, whom she described as a mischievious boy with a good heart.
When she recognised the bicycle and the slippers she approached the police officers to find out what happened.
'I was very frightend when I saw the blood,' said Jiao Kai, who spoke softly.
'I have not cried at all, but my heart hurts inside.'
