My male relative , 36, living in Choa Chu Kang area, suffering from multiple disability, deafness and cerebral palsy (he cannot carry tray of foods and has difficulty walking normally).

Last time, he seek Bizlink (job placement agency for disabled) help and Bizlink offer him a job at its premise for $400, where he do simple data entry ( this kind of job not available nowadays because you need to communicate with people a lot , and you must be able to multi-task... When the job finished, you will be assigned another task. but in his case, when can he do after data entry job ended? can the employer ask him to work in counter?)

As time went by, he had difficulty in paying for transports and food, as his pay is too low.. He pay over $80 in MRT and bus monthly.. After spending, he find that he save very little and cannot pay for entertainment and expense like going for movies..

Further more, Bizlink urged him to do OT and after he reached home it is already 11 plus , have to bath quickly and go to bed at 12.30 am and wake up at 5 am and get ready to work, at this time, bus will be crowded and so do MRT , it is rush hour. Do you think it is very tiring?

And Bizlink finally found a place , a cleaner cum dishwasher at Pasir Ris Hawker Centre. However, he refused to accept that. Why ? because of his condition, he can be bullied, and the distance travelled is great, ( you have to pay $100 monthly for transport), pay is low ( $550) and working hour is long (6.30 am to 10 pm)..

Job placement officer there wrote to him, ' why so fussy? when there is a job , be happy and be committed to the job."


If you were him, are you willing to travel all the way for this kind of work?

He used to a office attendant at government department until government decide to pharse out the jobs and he cannot fit in the new stucture ( he cannot multi task and deaf, and also cerebral palsy sufferer..)

Yeah, but there is no suitable job for him as employer prefer able-bodied employees.

Do you know where is Bizlink Centre? It is located at Chai Chee Lane, at Bedok.

He quitted his job at Bizlink last year because he cannot tahan long travel, and doing OTs and coming back late, for a low pay..


(Job placement officer , according to him , is a graduate earning few thousands dollars , driving a comfortable car..She ask him why cannot travel to Pasir Ris ? Of course, she drive a car and can reach there within half an hour or so..with her salary, she can pay $200 on car petrol monthly, if she put herself in his shoes, she will know it is difficult to travel...)

Remember the man who is very short and suffering from leg disability, staying at home with his mother at Toa Payoh, he told The New Paper that it is difficult for him to go all the way to Commonwealth industrial estate to work for $390 salary.. After paying taxi fares or MRT fares, what remains is not enough for savings..

Maybe he can seek help from those volunteer groups that can help him to find job. Do a search online for those groups and email them for help.

To be frank, even normal ppls also not willing to travel so far for works and pay so less. So i think it not worth it .. especially his pay is so slow.

depends on if u like the job. but in ur relative case, i think ask government for help? i stay near CCK also, work in aljunied. transport is $80 per month, 10% of my pay!

ok, not as bad as ur relative, but my job is kind of a knowledge base one, ought to be at least 1.2k+.

i could suggest to wait for a better job, no point work so hard, in the end the money so less. but also must see if his savings alot or not, or if got potential jobs for him in the near future. health also impt, and happiness. stay happy no matter wat

well if reached until this kinda case,honestly it is not want or not the job lor,it is need the job and must do lor,if not cannot even eat.what to do the working society is cruel

Thank for your site, but it lead to Bizlink Centre, my relative had unpleasant experience there.

Zenite, government will refer his case to Bizlink Centre and Bizlink will ask him to work in sheltered workshop for low pay , he will be persuaded to do OT often.

Phoenixity, working there and look for more jobs? Given low pay and long working hours and distance travelled.. Where got time to look for jobs? Pay is low (he cannot travel anywhere in Singapore to attend job interview , he will be tired when he reach home so late at night. If he take leave frequently to go for interview , when will supervisor think of him? If you stay in Choa Chu Kang St , you have to go to work in Paris Ris for mthly pay of $500, wake up at 5.30 am , go to busstop at 6 am and take feeder bus (often crowded at this time) to Choa Chu Kang MRT and MRT is also crowded), because of his condition, he cannot stand for long (there are no seats for him) and when MRT jerked , his movement very awkward.. When he finish work in 10 plus, he take MRT back to Choa Chu Kang and take feeder bus... (if he finish work at 11 plus, feeder bus wont be available.. ) So, is it worth it?


His mother prepared package meal for him every morning so that he will save more. By then he will become more dependant on his mother. I don't think it is right.

As for social worker, she should not be so concerned about meeting quota by putting people into the job they don't like.. and not calling them proud and fussy when they refused low-paying cleaning or dishwashing job at faraway place. Imagine if she had the son like him, can she offer him a cleaning or dishwashing job at faraway place ,of course she won't because it will be embarrassing if their elder relatives found out.

yah lor.. at least he still has some money to do something. if he stays at home. although he can rest and not feel tired, he doesnt get any money.

the real world is cruel. everyone has to suffer. if they dont suffer, the wont get what they want.

seems like all the energy and time is spent just to break even and get by life. there's no free lunch unless you own a shopping mall and can simply sit home shake leg collect rent.

If u got a job...just work while u find another new job..it would be better than no money to survive..but it will be like a robot to work day by day..just trying to survive with no goals =/
