I agree with lwings. The trip there is a killer. It took me more than 20 hours to get there. Lol. I usually have a stopover in Japan.

So far, I have been to Silicon Valley, San Francisco, LA, Las Vegas and Texas. If anyone has gone there after 9/11, it's a nightmare. The immigration queues is so long. It took me more than 3 hours to clear immigration when I went there last and I heard from my colleagues recently it didn't get much better cos the checks are really stringent.

I must say that I am humbled when I am in Texas. Everything there is really huge, from the food portions, the flags, shopping malls, roads and even parking lots. It makes you feel that Singapore is really small. You have to drive in order to cross the road from my hotel to McDonalds even though it's literally across the road. Lol.

Sorry fudgie, I haven't been to Houston yet. Texas is really big and you cannot really finish visiting the whole place in a week. Are you going there to visit the NASA space centre? In fact, I went there to work and didn't have much time going around sight seeing. :cry3:

wah so cool. the first time i went to US when i was 10 i think. i went to california area. with disneyland all those. but i forgot. i want to go there again!

the next two times i visited US is during last year.
one is after o levels, i went to visit my mom at new york for 2 months. shopped like crazy. the factory outlet there is the best.

while the last time(sept 06) was school trip to las vegas. was very enjoyable overall.

i think when you go US need to take note is about tipping. like macdonalds, if you never clear your plates you will need to tip around 1-2 dollars.
while restaurants would be 15% of total bill i think.
i'm not too sure about other services like manicure, hair cutting.

for school trip it subsidised by the school by SGD1k. so i paid around SGD1.2k for the trip.
i stayed there for 5days.
airplane tix cost the most of the trip.

i stay in a hostel(very motel like) at downtown las vegas. i think around USD40-50(SGD65-80) per night. which was quite cheap cause i shared the room with a friend and the bed was queen size. But overall for the price we paid, the hostel was good enough
cause i think we had to stick with school budget also.

i dont remember the total amount i spend on food and whatnots.

but i can tell u the price. macdonalds is around USD5/SGD8 like while Singapore costs SGD5.
I remembered going to chinatown and paid for wonton noodles at USD9/SGD15. when the dish come, it was like 3 times more than normal singapore serving.

the normal Lays potato chip costs US99cents at New york.
but at las vegas the Lays cost around the same price as singapore SGD3.
i dont know why~

for transportation, las vegas very easy to go around one. just one bus that goes down the las vegas strip. paid for USD5 dollars for one whole day's trip.
while at new york, i take the metro(railway) for USD2 per ride.

PS: mineral water is more ex than pepsi or softdrinks. cause usa water isn't drinkable unless you boil them.

eh i don't think i help much cause i've never been to texas. but i think if ur visiting ur friend i think ur friend could tell u more stuffs.
