TOKYO - UP TO 108 skiers at a ski resort in central Japan on Saturday found themselves trapped in mid-air after eighteen lifts stopped functioning, a fire department official said.
Officials were investigating the cause of the breakdown in Nagano Prefecture, which is a popular skiing destination and hosted the 1998 Winter Olympics.
'I have absolutely no idea why they stopped - the weather was fine too,' the official said.
He was unable to confirm the actual number of people trapped, although he said each lift allows a maximum of six people.
Sixty-three people have already been rescued as a team of 44 fire fighters was dispatched. Skiers in five lifts remain trapped while two lifts have begun operating again, he added. -- AFP
