Default United European League?

Strachan predicts the end for FIFA and UEFA
LONDON (Reuters) - Celtic manager Gordon Strachan believes the authority of world football's two most powerful organisations, FIFA and UEFA, will eventually be ended by rich businessmen.
"There will be a new structure, a new body," Strachan told the BBC's Inside Sport programme late on Monday. "The powers that be, the businessmen coming into football now, will say 'forget FIFA, forget UEFA, we're so powerful we'll have three (European) leagues with the best 60 clubs.

"I think that's the way it has got to go."

Strachan added that FIFA, world football's governing body and UEFA, which has governed European soccer since 1954, will have no choice but to go along with such a development.

"It will be that powerful that I think FIFA would have to go along and say 'we better let them get on with it because they'll just keep the players away from international level'."

As a result of those changes, Celtic and Rangers, who have dominated Scottish football for more than a century, could start playing the major English clubs on a regular basis.

Over the years plans to integrate the Old Firm as Rangers and Celtic are known, into the English league have been regularly mooted and thwarted, but Strachan believes they will start playing each other in a new European League.

"I think in years to come there will be a European league with 54 or 60 clubs," he told the BBC. "That's the way everybody will get round it."

Just imagine a Super League with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Arsenal, Man Utd, Liverpool, Chelsea, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Rangers, Celtic, PSV, Ajax, Porto, etc.

I also believe that it is a matter of time before this would become a reality. Probably in the next 10-20 yrs time.

i doubt it will ever happen. There are major consequences if they were to do that.

Of course, the Old Firm (Celtic & Rangers) prefer this outcome... Because they're just sick and tired of playing against weak opposition every weekend and then against very tough opposition every wednesday... The weird case in Scotland is that close to 90% of all the money in Football in the country is shared by 2 clubs, and the rest are picked up 4 divisions of 10 clubs and the rest of the Scottish Premier League... Naturally, with more resources at their disposal, the 2 clubs simply outshine the rest of the country...

The idea of Europe's best clubs breaking away and forming a European League was mooted a few years back when the industry was having a "recession" then when attendances fell in Serie A, TV money crashed in EPL and La Liga started becoming boring...

But the outcome then was that this would result in more lower-league clubs going bankrupt, which is bad for the industry and thus wasn't accepted. Besides, there's alot of pride in the different countries in Europe, they won't allow this to happen...
