Default UniSIM accepts SIRS' qualifications for entry into degree courses

SINGAPORE: Good news for those taking programmes at the Singapore Institute of Retail Studies (SIRS) – SIM University (UniSIM) is recognising the Institute's Workforce Skills Qualifications in retail studies, for entry into its degree courses.

This was announced by Manpower Minister Ng Eng Hen at the opening of the Institute's new campus at the HDB Hub on Tuesday.

V Seshamani, CEO, SIRS, said: "Currently, this particular new campus is fully occupied. In the night time, our classrooms are ninety percent full, in the day time we are occupying 50 to 60 percent because we are a continuing-education institute, so there are more night classes."

Just five days after graduation, 31-year-old Andy Lim got a job in the retail sector.

For him, dealing with customer complaints is one practical takeaway from the course.

He said: "You need to cool down the customer, calm them down, listen to them, then confirm with the customer what their feedback is all about and we will try to solve the problem for the customer."

The Manpower Minister also challenged the industry to make Singapore one of the top three global retail destinations.

To achieve this, he said the country needs a well-trained workforce that differentiates itself from the competition.

"Your experience can be either positive or negative depending on your encounter with the salesperson or food and beverage waiter or waitress. So we have to scale up our training," said Mr Ng.

Singapore's retail industry workforce currently stands at 130,000.

And the Institute aims to train a third of them by the end of next year.

About 300 retail organisations have already sent their staff for customised training at the Singapore Institute of Retail Studies and the Manpower Minister said that is a good sign as it shows retailers are already preparing for a future retail boom.

Another 10,000 retail-related jobs are in the pipeline with projects like Orchard Turn and the Integrated Resorts coming onstream.
