IN another case of domestic violence in Kuala Lumpur, a man set himself on fire while holding his 4-month-old son hostage, after an argument with his wife.
He ended up with 30 per cent burns to his body, while his wife was burnt on her feet. Their son suffered from smoke inhalation.
The man's elder brother and a police officer were also injured in the fire.
China Press reported that MrWeng Shu Qiang, 33, had been quarrelling with his 33-year-old wife, Madam Peng Ying, on Monday.
She claimed that he had thrown their 1-year-old daughter on the sofa in anger.
This upset her and she took their two daughters to her brother-in-law's home nearby.
When she returned, Mr Weng had locked himself inside the flat with their baby son. He threatened to kill them both by setting fire to their home.
Despite his wife's repeated pleas, Mr Weng allegedly refused to unlock the door. Madam Peng called the police and fire brigade. Mr Weng's brother also arrived to help.
This infuriated Mr Weng, who was splashing thinner around the flat. He also turned on the gas supply whenever the police approached.
After an hour's standoff, Mr Weng finally unlocked the door.
But, in the fray that ensued when the police barged into the flat, he accidentally dropped his lighter.
The flat went up in flames.
Fortunately, the fire brigade put out the fire before it spread.
Mr Weng's brother suffered more than 10 percent burns. It is not known how seriously injured the police officer is.
It is not clear if MrWeng has been arrested.
