Temasek Holdings has declined to comment on reports that it is in talks to sell its 41 percent stake in Shin Satellite, the only satellite operator in Thailand.

Reports say two telecom companies owned by the Thai government may be joining hands with Samart Group, a Thai telecoms conglomerate, to buy over the shares.

The two state-owned firms are said to be TOT Corp and CAT Telecom.

The reports follow remarks by the Thai coup leader Sonthi Boonyaratglin last week that he wanted to reverse Temasek's US$3.8 billion purchase of Shin Corp, especially the satellites.

Thailand's Information & Communications Technology Minister Sittichai Pokaiudom has since clarified that a deal will only go through if Temasek is willing to sell the assets.

On Tuesday, Mr Sittichai said his government was in informal talks with Temasek to buy back Shin Satellite.

Reports quoting Thai officials have said Shin Satellite could be worth up to US$280 million.

Shin Satellite is a unit of Shin Corp, which Temasek bought in January last year from the family of ousted Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Since the takeover, Thailand's military leaders have expressed concerns about national security.

General Sonthi had accused Singapore of monitoring military phone calls through Temasek's control of Shin Satellite and Thailand's biggest mobile phone operator, AIS.
