14-year-old was representing school in HK final
IT was the final of the national youth rugby championship in HongKong.
Representing his school, the 14-year-old student wanted to win the game badly.
But in the process, the teen suffered a head-on collision and remains in the critical care ward of a Hong Kong hospital.
The incident happened on Thursday in a sports complex in Shek Kip Mei, Kowloon, at the tournament final for secondary schools.
It was the third and last day of the tournament.
The teen had banged his head against an opponent who was of bigger build, reported Apple Daily.
Upon impact, he was said to have rebounded. He started vomitting before passing out.
The match was stopped as the medics rushed to help.
His pulse and breathing were said to have stopped temporarily. He was then rushed to the hospital in an ambulance.
A Hong Kong rugby union official said that the incident was not captured in the match video,
but other players gave witness accounts.
According to Oriental Daily, his head had bashed into his opponent's head as both had lowered their frames in a charging stance.
SMALLER BUILD
After the collision, both fell to the ground, but the teen seemed the worse for it as he was of a smaller build.
A doctor from the Hong Kong school of physical education and sports science said that they already have regulations in place to prevent such mishaps.
For instance, he said that players should not charge at opponents head-on.
He also advised players to build up their neck muscles to reduce the chance of injury.
The Hong Kong rugby union official said it is compulsory for all players to wear gum shields, but not head gear as there is no evidence that head gear can help to prevent injuries.
It is not known if the teen was wearing gum shield or head gear.
The official said that they are still investigating the incident, but added that the students have undergone proper training and will only play if the coach feels they are fit enough.
A doctor from an accident and emergency ward said that in this instance, the casualty is almost certain to suffer from concussion. He might even suffer from brain haemorrhage.
