SINGAPORE: A teacher from a top all-boys secondary school has been sentenced to a year's jail.

William Ding was found guilty on three charges of molesting two of the schoolboys, who were aged between 13 and 14 years old at the time the offences were committed in 2001 and 2004.

In Mr Ding's defence, his lawyer read out many of the 145 testimonials submitted in support of the 35-year-old teacher.

In court, mitigation lasted for more than two hours.

Mr Ding's defence listed glowing testimonials from friends, family and students. One of it said he often went "beyond care and duty" for his students.

But the prosecution produced previous cases where abuses of trust had taken place and victims were taken advantage of by persons in authority.

As a result, the prosecution asked the judge to impose a sentence of nine months.

But the defence argued that in Mr Ding's case, there was no breach of trust.

And when District Judge Jusbendaur Kuar announced her decision, family members left the court disappointed.

Although the judge recognised that Mr Ding had contributed to the development of students at his school, she said he had used his position as a school teacher to molest the boys.

On the three charges, she sentenced him to one year in prison.

Tay Yuanqi, one of Mr Ding’s supporters, said: "There are still many parents, ex-students, teachers, colleagues and other well-wishers that are in full support of him."

Mr Ding is out on a S$20,000 bail and will be appealing against his sentence.

His lawyer, Engelin Teh, said: "The appeal is going to be based on facts, on whether the court has interpreted the facts correctly."
