IT was forbidden love from the start.
Yet it did not stop a 27-year-old teacher and a 16-year-old student from his school from being together.
Later, he allegedly made her pregnant.
The secondary school teacher then gave her $1,500 to get rid of the baby.
When contacted by The New Paper on Sunday, the teacher did not deny the sexual relationship with the student.
He has since been suspended from teaching duties pending the Ministry of Education's investigation. (See report in box.)
Despite the suspension, the teacher-student relationship continued until last week, when the duo had a fight - with both sides accusing each other of assault.
WHEN IT BEGAN
It all began sometime in September 2005.
Kelly (not her real name and pictured on facing page) was 16, and about to sit for her N-level examinations.
Tan (not his real name) was then a new teacher in the school, located in the east.
Kelly, who spoke to us on condition of anonymity, found him attractive and was smitten by him. So, when he taught her class as a relief teacher for a day, she boldly approached him.
'Can I have your telephone number?' asked the petite girl.
He gave her his number and thought nothing of it, even though she was not in any of the classes he was teaching before.
She later sent him an SMS message asking him out. Kelly's two other girlfriends went along as well.
Tan didn't think there was anything wrong because he would sometimes go on group outings with students.
But after the outing, Kelly said she contacted him. 'When I went home, I sent him an SMS message and asked him if we still had a chance to go out again.'
The answer was 'yes'.
They communicated via SMS messages and would arrange to meet after school.
Speaking in a mixture of Mandarin and English, Kelly said: 'I love him because he's a graduate. He's smart and he teaches me things. I'd ask him when I want to know about things and he could tell me about it.
'He knew how to say things to me to make me very happy... like, sometimes, he'd ask if I'd eaten, then he'd say he'd buy food for me.'
Kelly claimed she was so in love with the teacher, she allowed him to control her life.
After she left school following her N-level exams in Sept 2005, Kelly ran away from home. She turned to Tan, who housed her for one night in his HDB flat, where he lives with his parents.
Kelly, who turns 18 this April, said: 'That night was the first time I had sex with him.
'At that time, I didn't know him that well so I wasn't that keen actually. But I was afraid that if I didn't, he would stop seeing me.'
From then on, she said, they had regular sex, mostly at Tan's home when his parents were out.
Tan, however, had a different story to tell.
He claimed the relationship began only after Kelly had left school. (See report on next page.)
NOT HER FIRST SEX PARTNER
When asked, Kelly revealed that Tan was not her first sex partner. She didn't say how many people she'd slept with before, but claimed she has had about three or four boyfriends before Tan.
She said that her relationship with Tan was the 'most serious' she's had, because it lasted longer than others that were about 'a few weeks or a few months'.
Last October - a year after the two started going out - Kelly's period was late. She sent Tan an SMS message to tell him about it.
'He replied immediately and said he would meet me. When he got to my place, he had a pregnancy test kit. I did the test and it came out positive. I was very scared and wanted to tell my mum. But he said not to tell them, not to let other people know.'
Kelly said Tan subsequently took her to a doctor. 'He told the doctor I wanted to have an abortion. He made that decision for me without asking about how I felt,' she alleged.
A date was set for an abortion about two weeks later.
But before that, instead of consulting her family, Kelly asked her friends for advice.
And their words of wisdom were: 'Take money from him for the abortion and tonics.'
The agreed sum was $1,500.
The couple also agreed in writing never to meet again or speak of their relationship.
That agreement didn't last long.
Tan showed up at the clinic when Kelly was having her abortion. And that softened her heart. Kelly said: 'I cried and he hugged me and comforted me. Especially after the abortion, I felt like I couldn't forget him. I don't know why.'
The two continued their relationship.
POSSESSIVE
When The New Paper on Sunday met with Kelly at the condominium where she lives with her parents, she had decided to tell her story because she was fed up with Tan's controlling ways. Her mother, who was home, declined to be interviewed.
Kelly said the recent heated argument was the last straw for her. She claimed that Tan had pushed her and she fell on the road. She bit him in retaliation, she said.
She claimed Tan had a habit of checking on her, often questioning her whereabouts, screening her phone calls and checking her SMS messages. This led to frequent quarrels.
However, she confessed that she harbours hope of being with him. 'I still feel that he's the best guy I've been with. He's smart. If he doesn't treat me like this any more, I do hope...,' she said, her voice trailing off.

REMINDER TO BEHAVE PROPERLY
THE teacher was suspended from his duties after a friend of Kelly's lodged a complaint at the school.
The school's principal said: 'The school was informed in Oct 2006 of the relationship and investigated the matter. The teacher was interdicted on half-pay pending MOE's investigations.'
The principal added: 'The school does not condone improper student-teacher relationships. We take a serious view of such misconduct by the teacher.
'All staff members are regularly reminded on appropriate conduct with students. Students are also aware of channels to turn to for help when needed.'
