A CONSTRUCTION worker died after being hit on the head by a metal beam.
At another site, glass shards rained down on a road. Fortunately, no one was hurt.
Both incidents took place yesterday.
The first incident happened at the upcoming Far East Organization shopping centre, Orchard Central, on Orchard Road.
The police said they received a call after 10am yesterday and rushed to the site beside Specialist Shopping Centre.
They found a man, in his 50s, unconscious with serious head injuries.
'The man was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead at 11.45am,' the police spokesman said.
Mr Song Yew Kee of DP Architects, who is working on the project, said: 'We are saddened by the unfortunate accident.
'We will have to go through the due process that entails investigations by the relevant authorities.
'We will extend all possible assistance to the family of the deceased.'
The Ministry of Manpower and the police are investigating the accident.
In the second incident, glass windows from the upcoming condominium Icon Village at Tanjong Pagar, also developed by Far East Organization, fell more than 10 storeys down.
No one was injured.
ROAD JUNCTION
Eyewitnesses said they heard the sound of glass shattering and then found the junction of Gopeng Street and Tras Street, which is beside the condominium, strewn with glass pieces.
Mr Samuel Phua, 25, a passer-by, said: 'I saw a large group of onlookers around the area which was filled with glass pieces.'
The financial adviser said he saw someone yelling at two construction workers, perched on a gondola near the shattered window, not to move.
They eventually reached the ground safely.
Mr Phua said: 'More than 20 workers immediately started clearing the glass with water.
'It is very dangerous as the street is used by many pedestrians to walk to and from the MRT station. I use the area very often.
'I'm very lucky. If I had been there five minutes earlier, I might have been hurt.'
