TAIPEI - A MAN has been arrested for making a death threat against Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian and his family via e-mail, police said on Saturday.
'The suspect was arrested at a gas station where he worked part-time ... He admitted to making the threat but claimed it was an act of a sudden whim of emotions,' police said.
The man sent the message to Mr Chen's office on Friday, threatening to hurt him with 'two bullets', a reference to an election-eve shooting that lightly wounded Mr Chen and his running mate Annette Lu in 2004.
The president said he received an intimidatory letter earlier this week vowing to hurt his daughter and a grandson.
His office said security around the president has since been tightened.
However, some opposition lawmakers have questioned Mr Chen's motives for disclosing the threats ahead of the parliamentary and presidential elections early next year.
The opposition has accused Mr Chen, also chairman of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, of staging the 2004 shooting to win sympathy - a charge he has denied.
Mr Chen won reelection for a final four-year term by a wafer-thin 0.22-per cent margin in 2004. -- AFP
