Student slept as bedroom burnt September 23, 2007 12:31pm
AN 18-year-old man who had fallen asleep studying is being treated for burns after a fallen lamp set his bed alight in Melbourne.
A smoke alarm woke the man's parents who rushed into his bedroom at about 1am (AEST) and found the bed smouldering and their son still asleep.
The parents dragged the mattress outside, which set some household items on fire, and where it burst into flames in the front yard of their home in Cain Avenue, Northcote.
The young man has minor burns to his feet and his mother has minor burns to a hand.
The Northcote family was lucky no one was killed or seriously injured, with a danger the young man might have drifted into an unconscious state, Metropolitan Fire Brigade commander Ken Brown said. |
