Strong quake hits East Timor, no damage: meteorologist
JAKARTA - A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck off East Timor on Saturday, but there was no threat of a tsunami and no immediate word of damage, an official from Indonesia's meteorology office said.
The quake hit at 3:03 pm local time at sea, about 243 kilometres northwest of the capital Dili, at a depth of 120 kilometres, according to a statement from the Meteorological and Geophysics Agency here.
A tsunami alert was not issued.
'There are no reports of damage,' agency staff member Edi Kusuma said, adding that the quake would likely have not been felt on land as it occurred so deeply beneath the seabed.
'Six-magnitude quakes that happen very deeply usually cannot be felt,' he said.
