Default Strong quake hits Indonesia's Sumatra

JAKARTA: An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 struck off the west coast of Indonesia's Sumatra island Wednesday, but there were no immediate reports of damage, seismologists said.

The epicentre of the quake, which struck at 7:19 am (0019 GMT), was located about 129 kilometres (80 miles) southwest of the city of Padang, at a depth of 20 kilometres, the Indonesian Meteorology and Geophysics agency said.

There were no tsunami warning issued after the tremor.

The US Geological Survey clocked the quake at 6.2.

An 8.4-magnitude quake hit western Sumatra in September, killing 23 people. It was followed by a series of major aftershocks which experts have said could rattle the region into this week.

Indonesia sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where continental plates meet -- and where earthquakes are a regular and often deadly occurrence. - AFP/ac
