[Update: After talking to the HR on the phone, which supposedly is the decision-maker by the new company's policy, they have decided to not employ me. As far as I know, the hiring manager thinks well of me, and that the 2 vacancies aren't filled up yet. So HR has some issues with me (maybe money), without any negotiation nor feedback.]
I am in a dilemma and I'm here to seek opinions for my 'situation', apart from discussion(s) with parents/friends/etc. Sorry for the long post! =X And, I'm not young anymore, currently in my mid-twenties.
Which one would you choose? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (A) Comfort Zone [Current job]
- Data analyst for an MNC in the Telecommunication industry [since Feb 2007].
- Pay is comfortable [for someone with no bachelor's degree]
- I've got very nice colleagues and bosses [I think they like me too =)].
- Bosses appreciate my work, hence there's job satisfaction.
- Was laterally "promoted" to this current role 6 mths ago [hence I'm still new and learning].
- Sometimes quite busy, but most of the time there's no OT.
- Working hours are flexible, and the hours are 35 hours/week most of the time [wk from 9-5pm].
- Coy. is located in an ulu place, but they provide transport to the nearest MRT station to where I stay.
- Meals are cheaper [since located in ulu place]
- There is an annual completion bonus + performance bonus [which was recently being rolled out]
- Jobscope is pretty mundane with deadlines to adhere to, but it's more of own-time-own-target kinda thing...
- Office got nice gym and big pantry area [FREE to use]!
- Sadly, this is a yearly renewable contract job, hence higher risks of job loss [BUT!! I don't mind staying for a few years so as not to be seen as a job hopper].
- Sadly, the whole team is outsourced [we're all contract staff], so there's no room for growth/promotion/conversion to perm/etc.
- Standard 15 days annual leaves / 12 days medical leaves & medical reimbursement, no other benefits. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (B) Diploma-related job
- Media-planning/marketing/coordinating role, with an MNC.
- Unknown jobscope, bosses [though the person who interviewed me gave me a good first impression], colleagues, etc.
- Higher pay [$$$$$$$]
- Perm job
- NO AWS!!! [but they have variable bonus, accordingly to one's performance level]
- Full benefits [dental, insurance, medical, optical, etc]
- Related to my diploma [Media and communication]
- On rare occasions, need to travel to client location [I'm not independant enough to travel alone].
- Located in CBD area
- Transport/meal/shopping expenditure will definitely go up
- Slightly longer working hours [but they have flexi-working hours too]
- Longer travelling time ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Footnote: Seriously, my current job is the first job which I've obtained job satisfaction in, as well as earn a comfortable pay, with a comfortable jobscope and workload. I prolly can work here for very, very long if I didn't go for interviews to check out opportunities.
For the new job they offered me, I was told they wanted someone with 1-3 years experience, and a degree holder [I have neither, so I don't know whether I can match up to their requirements, and seriously I thought I performed for the interview badly. -.-"]
Your thoughts, peeps?

I guess it depends on whether you want something comfortable yet not stable (since contract) or to try out new things and challenges?
Since you're still young, i suggest u try out the new job....

I'm actually looking at something that would let me move ahead in my career... | Quote: | | | Originally Posted by water-sprite | | | | | | It's quite difficult for me to advise cus haha i kinda like the job scope of your new job =x

Sounds exciting already! | | | | | LOL I'm actually not as young as you think. Perhaps I shld mention my age grp because you guys may think I'm in my early 20s since I made mention of my diploma.
lol...I thought of trying too.. It'll be my first perm job if I choose to take it up!! | Quote: | | | Originally Posted by Yongjin | | | | | | ur media n communication is mass comm??? if so do u like media industry tat is the first quest u have to ask urself....

Just that I nvr had prior experience in media industry before [apart from my journalism internship at MediaCorp Press. I edited advertorials for Today.] I know it's not cut-out for everyone, and I'm just scared to leave my comfort zone lols. hmm.. die lah like this. -.-" Those who say they care really don't. Because those who do, don't need words to justify their actions.

the other is to do something no one wants to do.

(: | | | | | I'm interested to be either a singer or a deejay, but that's building castles in the sky, so I supposed I need to find something that I have a foothold in, and something that feeds my lifestyle and etc. My current job is one that I nvr thought of doing actually, just an opportunity that came by when my pre-decessor left. | Quote: | | | Originally Posted by Hallyu | | | | | | Comfort Zone: seems to have more pros than cons as compared to job-related | | | | | LOL. But this comfort zone will vanish, it's just a matter of years. Now I'm working 1.5 years into the job, at max I may only be working here for 3 years? | Quote: | | | Originally Posted by Siong2 | | | | | | Comfort Zone is nice to stay, but to go further, you got no choice to leave what's good behind and work towards the better. | | | | | That's true, I guess I'm not as adaptable to changes as many people.
