Default You could soon pay by Visa the same way you use your ez-link card

Quote:
Paying for your credit card purchases could soon be as simple as tapping your mobile phone on a reader.

At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last month, electronic payments network Visa launched a platform that will be the basis of a globally-interoperable mobile payment system. A mix of back-end infrastructure and security standards, the platform will allow consumers to make credit or debit transactions anywhere in the world using devices, such as mobile phones, enabled with contactless technology.

One of the technologies the platform uses is near-field communications (NFC) - the same technology that powers the contactless ez-link card used in Singapore. NFC helps to transmit and receive data securely over a short distance.

For secure credit/debit card transactions, NFC-enabled devices need to be programmed manually by companies such as Visa before consumers can use them.

For large-scale deployment, the process could be tedious and time-consuming. But a new method of programming NFC-enabled devices circumvents the problem, said Dr Andreas Schauer, NFC director of Munich-based smart card company Giesecke & Devrient.

Using a method called over-the-air (OTA) personalisation, a user draws on a mobile carrier's telephony network to securely programme an NFC-enabled mobile phone with his account details.

Visa used this method for a trial in Malaysia in April last year, where credit card account information was transmitted to Nokia phones via Maxis Communications' mobile network. Users simply logged on to their online banking site to programme their phones with their credit card details.

Anyone who wants to use the platform will also need new phones with embedded NFC chips. The chip enables users to view transactions and data on the phone display.

NFC is deemed an attractive method for credit card payments as the NFC-enabled device does not have to be handled by a third party. The device must also be extremely close to the payment reader for a purchase to be made, so your mobile phone should not leave your sight.

A Visa spokesperson said that an NFC-based rollout for Singapore is highly probable because of the "high mobile-phone adoption rates and the relative sophistication of the payments market", but declined to specify when.

ezlink works wonders eh ^^
