Default Some inquiries about Stock/shares

Hi,I've been reading threads started by other SgClubbers as well as the replies they receive. However, I still have some questions as I do not know how stock/shares are like.

1. Where do I read more about stock/shares? Like how to do a research or maybe like learn more about it? sgx.com?

2. What's the difference between stock and share?

3. What's the price like for buying one lot of share? Isit range of 1k and above? Or how isit like?

Thanks for everyone's help! Will be appreciated. ^^

1. You should check out investment forums like sharejunction, sgfunds, etc. and learn from the rest

2. Many people have slightly different definitions for them. How I define stocks and shares may differ from yours.

3. It depends on the price per share. For penny stocks, it can be as low as a few hundred dollars while for blue chip stocks, it can be as high as a 5-digit figure.

Whenever I start on something I do not know, I will start by educating myself. Some good websites like investopedia, sharejunction etc are good. Not forgetting you need to pick up a book or two in the library...

If you are dead serious, I recommend you to go for some investment seminars, paid or otherwise and make friends with like-minded people.

For me, stocks is nothing more than buying a piece of a business....See yourself as a businessperson and you will have an idea how stock works.

If u wanna really go pro, you can sign up for Charted Financial Analyst (CFA) examinations. Criteria is at least last year of a degree or a degree holder.

Hi GreenShell, I'm also in the learning stage.

As a newbie, I tink you may be overloaded with info from too many trading forums and also faced problems understanding, not to mention analysing.

For ur qns 1, i suggest you may want to read up "Show me the money" by Ms Teh Hooi Ling to get a better understanding.

For qns 2, my interpretation for difference between stocks and shares is that they are generally the same thing. Both also denote ownership to companies. The time when u say "stocks" means ownership to ANY company, a more general term to use. Eg. Blue Chips "stocks". U used "shares" when u refer to a specific company. Eg. STX or SIA (U buy shares of "a" company)

For qns 3, 1 lot = 1000 shares. In S'pore, u must buy at least 1000 shares. To calculate the cost of 1 lot, u take 1000 x the price for 1 share.

Dear GreenShell, what a good question you have asked. "HOW DO YOU LEARN?" I'm interested to know from others as well. Sgclubbers, pls share.

It is perfectly fine to feel confused at this stage. You felt overloaded with info because you have no directions. People are normally willing to share with you their trading knowledge and experiences but I realised it was difficult to follow without having some basic knowledge and assessing own risk appetite. No matter how much others recommend at the initial stage, other than the faith you have in your belief, you are gambling with luck. In other words, you dunno wad to learn or where to start from because you dunno wad you need to know.

For me, I felt reading up theories and getting a kind soul to mentor me and learn from real life experiences helped.

There are generally 2 main types of stocks: common and preferred. Companies can however, classify further eg. according to voting rights.

Penny stocks are cheap, high risk highly speculative and can range from hundreds to thousands PER LOT.

I dont really quite agree on Penny stocks being risky as it is agree that many penny stocks do not have good fundamental and are pretty unstable. However, your profit can reap up to 50% or more if you make the right pick and play it right. Remember this, Trading is hard but risky is just the term amateur or outsiders tend to see as if you intend to earn money from trade, you will have to learn Risk management, Money management and have sets of trading rules, trading systems which will cover some rules to keep your account stable and not get kick off even after a string of loss.

I am a newbie too and have learnt alot of things from lautouzhi and few other's thread. Eg; stocks are not at all risky depending how you percieve it.
