Default SO SCARRED

China woman slashed on face and head by lover's ex-girlfriend
she's returning home for good

SHE was stalked, ambushed and slashed by another woman - all because she had gone out with the latter's former boyfriend.

The vicious attack left China woman Hang Xiao Yan, 31, needing 20 stitches. She has scars, including one on her face, that she may have to live with for the rest of her life.

The unlikely setting of this tragic love triangle was an outlet of famous roast meat chain Choo Chiang.

A male worker had entered into relationships with two female co-workers, one after the other.

Things turned violent when his ex-girlfriend, Goh Seng Hwee, 33, went after Ms Hang, his current girlfriend, with a penknife, on 23 Jul and slashed her on the back, eyelid and scalp.

Goh was sentenced to six months' jail earlier this week.

The attack left more than just scars on Ms Hang. She is so traumatised that she's leaving Singapore at the end of this month to start a new life back home.

She and her 30-something boyfriend, whom friends refer to as Ah Chen, are living together in an Yishun flat until she returns to China.

Ms Hang told Shin Min Daily News that while the attack had not affected her relationship with Ah Chen, she was now full of hatred towards Goh.

Goh (above) had waited three hours for MsHang (top) to finish work, then trailed her some distance before attacking her.

She said: 'I really hate her, and I often have nightmares. Even now, I still cannot get past what happened.'

Ms Hang told Lianhe Wanbao: 'A colleague once told me that Goh was my beau's ex-girlfriend, but we have never spoken before.'

A 4cm scar runs across her right eyelid - a stark reminder of the attack every time she looks into the mirror.

According to the medical report, she also has three 4cm scars on her back, and a 3cm scar on her scalp.

DATED FOR A YEAR

Mr Hong Chee Meng, 43, MsHang's boss at the Choo Chiang Roaster's outlet at Block 101 Yishun Avenue 5, said she and Ah Chen had dated for about a year.

He told The New Paper in Mandarin: 'As a woman, it is very upsetting for Xiao Yan for this to happen to her face.

'She doesn't like to talk about it. If she does, she will cry.'

According to Mr Hong, Ah Chen worked for the chain for more than 10 years before leaving earlier this year to set up his own roasted meat stall.

He got to know Goh, who was working at Choo Chiang's Marsiling outlet. It has nine outlets across the island.

They dated, but the relationship soured and they broke up.

Then he started dating Ms Hang, said Mr Hong.

Mr Hong added that the attack was the first time he heard of Goh harassing the couple.

'But one day before the attack, she walked past here (the Yishun outlet) and stared at Xiao Yan,' he said.

'She didn't say hello to anyone, and Xiao Yan ignored her.'

According to court papers, on the day of the attack, Goh bought the penknife from a nearby bookshop and waited some three hours for MsHang to finish work at about 10pm.

She then followed Ms Hang to Block 141.

Sensing someone on her trail, Ms Hang turned around and asked Goh why she was followingher.

That was when Goh pushed her onto the grass and punched her, before whipping out the penknife and slashing repeatedly at her screaming victim.

One slash just missed her right eye. It was so deep that the bone could be seen.

Two men jogging nearby saw the attack. One called the police, while the other pursued the fleeing Goh and caught her at the Sree Narayana Home at Yishun Avenue 5.

The police recovered a dark blue penknife with a 10cm blade from the scene.

Mr Hong said that another Choo Chiang worker from the Toa Payoh outlet, who lives in Yishun, happened to pass by at that time.

'She saw Xiao Yan bleeding from the head. The ambulance was already there, so she went with her to the hospital.'

Ah Chen called MrHong's brother the next day and said: 'Xiao Yan is not coming to work, something happened to her.'

Mr Hong then called Ah Chen to find out what had happened.

He added: 'Xiao Yan was hospitalised for a day, and some of the female workers went to see her.'

It was only two weeks after the attack that Ms Hang returned to work.

Said Mr Hong: 'She had a lot of pain on her back and scalp because of the attack.'

He said he had refrained from talking to her about the incident.

'It's painful for her, and it's their relationship, so I didn't ask.'

He said Ms Hang, who has been with Choo Chiang for two years and earns about $1,000 a month, is an articulate and strong woman.

'She came from China all alone to work and earn money for her family, so she's a good worker, very hard working,' he said.

'Now she just wants to go back, set up her own business and start afresh.'

And Ms Hang would only say of Goh: 'I hope that she changes for the better.'

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

She's twice unlucky in love

SHE was married at 18 and had four children.

Eight years ago, while she was pregnant with twins, Goh Seng Hwee's marriage fell apart.

Her sister told Shin Min Daily News that Goh was devastated after she and her husband separated.

He took the eldest daughter, while Goh kept the other three and moved back to live with her parents.

She worked two jobs to bring them up. Foodcourt assistant by day, coffeeshop beer girl by night.

Though money was tight and the hours were tough, Goh kept at it for the sake of her children.

Then came her ill-fated relationship with Ah Chen.

Now that Goh is in jail for slashing his current girlfriend, her parents are looking after her three children.

KIDS KEPT CRYING

Said the sister, who was not named in the report: 'When the children didn't see her for one week after her arrest, they kept crying and asking us where their mother was, and why she hadn't come home.

'We knew we couldn't hide it any longer, so we told them the truth.'

After that, they often took the kids along when visiting Goh.

During her mitigation plea, a tearful Goh said she regretted her actions, and it would be the first and last time she committed such a crime.

She pleaded for leniency for the sake of her children who, she claimed, their father hardly visited.

However, District Judge Jill Tan noted that Goh had planned her attack, waiting three hours for Ms Hang to finish work, trailing her some distance before attacking her.

When The New Paper visited the family's Yishun home, they did not want to talk about the case.

At Ah Chen's roasted meat stall in Toa Payoh, a worker said he was in Malaysia, and declined to put us in touch with him.
