Netizens praise China PM and pour scorn on local officials

WHEN Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visited the flood-hit Fuyang region in East China recently, little did he know that his visit would result in a deluge of praise for him.



As photos of him meeting the flood-stricken residents of the region surfaced online, Chinese netizens were quick to notice that the head of one of the world's most powerful countries' was holding his own umbrella.

This was in stark contrast to the group of officials around him who had minders holding aloft umbrellas for them, reported China Daily.

The photos were taken on the Premier's 13 Jul visit to the Fuyang region and it started a flurry of debate on the Web.

Most of the netizens stated that they were very happy to see their prime minister dressed in simple clothes.

One netizen commented that: 'Wen holding his own umbrella reveals the essence and purpose of being an official.'

Another wrote that: 'Through the photos, it's clear to see what a political leader, as a public servant, should do.'

One netizen even claimed that he had seen the 65-year-old wearing a pair of ordinary rubber-soled shoes while visiting the flooded regions, on television. The rubber-sole shoes were the type that poor people used to wear when times were hard.
