But when some of his friend's guests teased his daughter by pinching her, car mechanic Mr Zhuo Hong Qing saw red.
His daughter, 4, suffers from the Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, a condition which causes her to bruise easily.
So Mr Zhuo chided the men.
But things started going downhill at the party and the family of five decided to leave.
And just as they were getting into their car, they were attacked by a group of men with parangs.
Mr Zhuo, 33, was slashed four times while his brother-in-law Mr Li Zhi Feng, 22, was chopped on the head.
Fortunately, Mr Zhuo's six-month-pregnant wife, 9-year-old son and daughter were unharmed.
His wife, Madam Li Guan Ling, told China Press that they suspected the attack was by men from the birthday party as the family had crossed paths with other party guests too.
She said that after her husband scolded the men for pinching their daughter, another drunk guest approached her husband for a drinking challenge.
Madam Li said: 'My husband refused, so my brother stepped up. And when my brother was puking outside the house after the game, the man poured his beer into our food.
'When I scolded him, he crushed the can in anger and my husband then scolded him for drinking beyond his limit.'
It was at this point that the family decided to leave. But just as they were about to drive off, someone opened the back passenger door, and yanked MrLi out of the car, insisting that he say sorry.
As Mr Li was apologising, Madam Li heard someone shout: 'Don't talk so much, just kill them!'
She saw two men running out with parangs and hacking her brother on his head.
Mr Zhuo hurriedly pushed Mr Li into the car, before rushing to protect his wife.
While he managed to get her into the car too, Mr Zhuo was surrounded by the men, who threw him to the ground and slashed away.
GETTING AWAY
Somehow, Mr Zhuo managed to get into the car and Mr Li drove off.
The attackers managed to smash the car's rear windscreen before the family got away.
However, barely 800m into their escape, MrLi crashed the car into a divider and it rolled down a slope.
The family managed to climb up to safety, where passers-by sent them to hospital.
Doctors told Mr Zhuo that the wound on his neck was very close to a major artery, while the one on his head barely missed his brain.
Mr Zhuo received more than 100 stitches for his wounds while Mr Li received seven.
His children were so traumatised by the attack that they still wake up in the middle of the night in fright.
Madam Li told China Press that even though the half-hour attack took place just 10m away from the friend's home where the party was held, no one came out to help.
She said: 'Someone did try to throw a chair at the attackers, but it hit our car instead.'
It is not known if the family made a police report.
