SINGAPORE: Singaporeans can now have easier and cheaper access to all their communication needs at home.

SingTel - the dominant telco player in Singapore has launched an integrated super highway for homes called Generation MIO - short for more-in-one.

Riding on the backbone of its internet protocol network via SingTel's fixed telephone lines, it promises to deliver multiple services, like mobile, Wifi and internet access on a single platform.

SingTel says Generation MIO - a range of digital integrated services, is the first of its kind in the Asia Pacific region.

At the core of its latest offering is the MIO box - a device that goes beyond being a simple modem.

Through the box, users can be connected wirelessly at home to their computers, mobile phones, fixed-line phone and cordless phone.

Mobile phone users can also use it to make free calls while connected via Wifi.

"It's targeted across all segments of the consumer population in Singapore. At one end of the spectrum for people who are using our direct exchange line or phone service - it allows them to basically pay a fixed fee of $15.75 a month and they can make unlimited local calls from their home phones, and on top of that they get broadband access at 256kbps download included in that monthly package," said Allen Lew, CEO, SingTel Singapore.

For its existing mobile and broadband customers, the telco is offering 9 different fixed price packages ranging from $68 to $148.

It believes competitive pricing and ease of use would help attract users to switch from its competitors.

Compared to similar offerings by other telcos, SingTel says users could enjoy savings of up to some 30 percent.

"Today our copper wires enable us to provide broadband access up to 25 Mbps. We're looking at other technologies that will allow us to increase it even further and even look at the commercial feasibility of rolling out fibre to the homes and obviously this is something that we will do in concert with the government's iN2015 plan," said Mr Lew.

SingTel says the future-proofed box will enable it roll out other services like Pay-TV, home security and other remote monitoring services. - CNA /dt
