Singaporeans flock to East Coast to spend Lunar New Year holidays - Singapore's Online Community

SINGAPORE : The Lunar New Year is usually a time for reunions, dinners and family get-togethers, especially for the Chinese.

But what do the non-Chinese do during this long holiday period?

A favourite pastime for them is chilling out at the beach, especially along East Coast Park.

A sea of tents of all shapes and sizes turned East Coast Park into a camping ground.

Families, mainly Indian and Malay Singaporeans, were out in force on Monday to enjoy the long holiday break.

Hasnita said: "I must say that it is the cheapest way to spend time with your family and brings us closer and back to nature."

Kannan said: "We make a point that every year we try to come here together with the family and just stay for two days and really enjoy!"

Sarimah said: "Easy access to the toilet, and it is cleaner down here than in Changi!"

Also joining in the fun were foreigners working in Singapore.

Rafael said: "Just having a family day today."

Virgilio said: "We love nature and at the same time we feel we are still in Philippines."

Ramon said: "We usually picnic outside at a beach or somewhere."

Some, like one family from China, were there to soak in the start of a new beginning.

Huang Fu Qing said: "Because the New Year has a new start, I want to see the sea. If you see the sea, your heart will widen and then your mind can change!"

Many also took part in the usual beach activities like barbecues, playing football or cricket, and even team-building games.

Most came prepared for a chill out time but also had their wishes for the Year of the Pig!

Rafael said: "I wish our economy booms so that everybody has a good job and good work like me!"

Prabakaran said: "I heard this pig has come after 60 years; if this is true, I am 58 now, I wish to see some good luck!"

Hasnita said: "Definitely peace and prosperity for Singapore and definitely more money for everyone."

However, some who were wishing for more personal space, were disappointed to see such a big crowd.

Qamarul said: "I didn't expect them to come here, I thought they are off overseas, across the Causeway, or something like that!"

Prabakaran said: "I thought they won't be here because it is a Monday and everybody celebrated yesterday."

However celebrations were halted somewhat by the afternoon rain, but not enough to dampen the festive spirit of most of the crowd, who were just out for a good time! - CNA/ch
