Description
The Singapore River Hongbao is an annual Chinese New Year cultural exposition which as taken place in Singapore since 1987. It is part of Singapore’s unique way of welcoming and celebrating the lunar new year. At the River Hongbao, one can expect to see -

• majestic large-scale displays of popular Chinese mythical characters such as the God of Fortune, the 12 Chinese Zodiac Animals and other colourful decorations;

• cultural exhibitions, demonstrations, workshops, competitions on Chinese culture and New Year traditions;

• daily line-up of traditional and contemporary song & dance performances and activities;

• boisterous fireworks displays, amusement rides and games;

• food and beverage retailing local culinary favourites and foreign delicacies. The essence of SRHB lies in its strong cultural thrust of showcasing Chinese traditions and customs. Specifically, the culture and heritage of a selected city/ province of mainland China is traditionally showcased in SRHB, and this year, the culture and performing arts of Tibet will be showcased.

River Hongbao celebrations go multi-cultural

FOR THE first time in its 22 years, the Singapore River Hong Bao celebrations will have multi-cultural elements, showcasing a staged Malay royal wedding, dance performances and henna tattooists.

'It is a good opportunity to get the Malay and other non-Chinese communities to bask in the Chinese New Year atmosphere,' said Ms Faizah Mohammed Hassan, a spokesperson from Majlis Pusat.

Representation will not be token either, as more than 100 people from the Malay community will be involved in the festivities.

Highlights include a royal wedding to be staged on Feb 6 - complete with sedan seats and a procession being led by martial artists, an exhibition of traditional Malay wedding customs as well as martial art displays of 'Silat' and traditional song and dance performances.

The Malay cultural events, as well as the festival's opening night will be hosted in Mandarin and English.

The Lhasa Municipal Ethnic Arts Troupe will present Tibetan songs and dances to visitors at the Singapore River Hong Bao this year.

Another feature is an acrobatic troupe from Taiwan, whose performances will include magic tricks and optical illusions.

From Feb 10 to 12, there will be cooking demonstrations of traditional food dishes from the different dialect groups like Hakka, Hokkien and Teochew.

Fans of 1970s singer, Teresa Teng, or popularly known as Deng Li Jun, are in for a treat - double-takes are in store for the stage appearances of Charlene Chi, whose looks and voice is widely hailed to bear an uncanny resemblance to the Taiwanese singer who died in 1995.

A reunion dinner at the Singapore River will be held for the first time on Feb 6.

River Hongbao returns with performance troupes from overseas

SINGAPORE: River Hongbao returns this year with three performing groups from overseas, so if you are heading to the Esplanade Park during the Lunar New Year celebrations, expect songs, tribal dances and even acrobatic feats.

Singer Qiu Lin is said to sound a lot like the late Taiwanese songstress Teresa Teng. Even her cheongsam used to belong to the singer and is on loan from Teng's brother.

Qiu Lin is performing at the River Hongbao from 5 to 7 February.

Joining her in the chorus is a troupe from Tibet called the Lhasa Municipal Ethnic Art Troupe.

There are also acrobats from Taiwan who will be cart-wheeling to the songs of Taiwanese tribal minorities.

The groups perform from 8pm to 10pm every night from 4 to 16 February.

On Lunar New Year's eve, the performance will run from 10pm to 12.30am.
