Singapore Poly launches diploma in resort facilities management
By Lee Khai Yan, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 22 January 2008 1907 hrs

SINGAPORE : With the first integrated resort due to open in 2009, Singapore's workforce can be brought up to speed with new professional courses.

Singapore Polytechnic has launched a new Diploma in Resort Facilities Services & Management.

The diploma will train students in engineering and management aspects of integrated resorts. Students will learn about the facilities operations, including maintenance of equipment.

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed with the Building and Construction Authority Academy of Singapore on Tuesday.

The tie-up with an industry authority will ensure the curriculum is relevant and practical.

The three-year full-time course will have an initial intake of 40 students.

Singapore Polytechnic believes that the course's strength lies in its multi-disciplinary nature - covering mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and building management and services.

Interested O-Level school leavers can find out more about this course on Singapore Polytechnic's website.

Dr Ng Eng Hong, Deputy Director, School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Singapore Polytechnic, said: "In traditional engineering, an engineering course is a single discipline engineering, but this course covers all the three.

"So when a resort operator, or a hotel operator employ, normally they have to employ three people to cover these three areas. Alternatively they can employ one person, plus additional training, but this course will take care of all three for them." - CNA/ms
