SINGAPORE : Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew paid his last respects to the late Mr Howe Yoon Chong on Wednesday evening.
Mr Howe died on Tuesday at age 84.
The former top civil servant and politician was a contemporary of Minister Mentor Lee at Raffles College.
Mr Howe is best remembered for the 1984 Report on the Problems for the Aged.
That report came up with several policy recommendations on preparing for an ageing population.
In his appreciation letter to Mr Howe on his retirement, Mr Lee, who was then the prime minister said, he's indebted to Mr Howe for the devoted work he had put in for the people.
Mr Lee also predicted that Singaporeans would see how difficult it is for children to stretch salaries in order to cover the support of aged parents.
They will then be grateful to Mr Howe for the controversy he had stirred by the Report on the Problems of the Aged. - CNA /ls
