2 Cents Singapore Airport Customs. Too strict?

Hi, recently my friend's parents went overseas to Turkey, and on the way back, bought a Shisha/Hookah bong plus the Tobacco for him. However, customs stopped his father, and fined him 3.9k for the tobacco! I'm not saying that he is right to bring in without declaring, but for one he didn't know, and really he is abit blur (guess that's why my friend is too, in the genes) and secondly, he is a certified Doctor who runs his own clinic. His wife is a Pilates teacher, and they are really really really nice people.

In the end the fine was cut to 2.1k, but that's still quite a sum. I feel though that they should have been given a stern warning as it was a first time offence too. any thoughts anyone?

Hmm a heavy fine serves its purpose as a warning to others who will then not dare to break the law. actually i feel its same principle, if someone assaults another, should he be let off with a stern warning instead of being punished by the law? the law is there for something, theres no reason first-time offenders should be refrained from being punished, if not there would be many first-time offenders.

edit: oh hi i see you're new u may wanna try out the welcome center!

Yes, to me is strict too.
Since i think there are many things happening around the world thus they have to make it more strict to be careful.

If is abit slacken , those few people maybe smuggling in some items and that is bad XD

Yup am new.

hmm yea i guess the world's current affairs with Thailand bombings and US getting themselves in the fray again are putting more pressure on the customs to not get caught off guard.

Though biased as i may sound, it's true first timers should be treated the same, but i'm sure some exceptions to certain people who are of higher status? Lawyers, Doctors, Ministers. But then again that will lead to those people taking advantage of the system. Guess it's down to one's self in the end.

How much tobacco ah.. not exactly sure.. i still feel abit 'pai seh' cos in the end they were buying it so their son and their friends (me and my pals) could smoke and enjoy. aiyo.

if they are not strict
people would not hesitate to bring in anything which is illegal..
the fine is the best warning to warn people, be it a huge sum..

tobacco is considered cigarettes (along the same line)... its like bringing a bunch of cheap packets from jb or something.. maybe that's why got fined..
at least it was 2.1k in the end..
it has nothing to do with what the parents' employment status and all.

nothing is more effective than having to lose some money.. stern warnings will in the end be ignored still..

ppl die from 2nd hand smoking is soooooo innocent .... hence it is a wise way for SG government to restrict smoking area .....

Sorry for digging up an old thread here but I've brought in a pack of the shisha tobacco from Dubai last Christmas and got through customs without any trouble. Since the tobacco contains zero nicotine and tar (printed largely on the box) I reckoned it's fine? Before that I've also brought in a shisha with some tobacco, from Dubai as well.

I think how strict they are depends on where you're flying in from and how you carry yourself while going through customs. When I flew into Singapore from Doha (that's in Qatar, which is next to Saudi Arabia, UAE and Bahrain) they pretty much checked everyone, even though Qatar is one of the richest country in the Arab world (per capita), but a largely unheard of country over in Singapore. (Slowly gaining recognition though) Qatar Telecom even owns a large stake in Starhub.

It's annoying that they check people flying in from Middle Eastern locations more strictly, even though it is booming over there!

i don't think being a doctor or teacher should give anyone an exception in the law. everyone must be equal mah. i always thought that profession doesn't equate to moral values/integrity, so don't associate them together and think that being one means the other. they can be together in 1 person, but is not always true.

i not saying they not gd ppl or anything, i dunno them at all so no comments on that. but dun need mention their profession, sounds like a skewed mentality to me.

anyway, think bout it. let them off with a small fine, set a precedent that everyone makes use of, end up smugglers everywhere, can cause big prob. best if nip it in the bud, leave no chance.
