Was reading an entry by Mr brown and i was rather shock and disappointed. Obviously there was an interview with Li Jiawei in China and she said in the intervire that she is a 北京人 and a 中国人。I hope she meant to say that she is a 华人 originally from beijing.

You want her to call herself 新加坡人???
Then (again), a lot of Singaporeans will say she is insincere.... 'come here few years then say she is Singaporean' etc. It's just too damn difficult to please Singaporeans, you know.
She is from Beijing. Nothing wrong.
Hokkien lesson:
唐山 = Deng Suah
唐人 = Deng Lang
Ask an elderly Hokkien speakers... Deng Lang = Chinese.
And YET, 唐山 is in China, near Beijing.
If you are a Chinese born in Singapore. Any Hokkien speaker, when asked about your race would say, he is 唐人 = Deng Lang = Native of Deng Suah.
You are so far from Beijing and you are Deng Lang... so I don't see nothing wrong with Jiawei saying she is a native of Beijing.
Long after you migrate (if you choose to one day when you find that to be a postman you need a degree here), when asked about the place of your birth, you are going to say, I was born in Singapore. Or you may even call yourself a Singaporean.
Most people are proud of their own countries (once an American, always an American, once a Chinese, always a Chinese), unlike Singaporeans (until someone points out something disparaging about Singapore) who are very quick to call themselves 'Australian', 'UK Citizen', or 'I'm American' barely months after getting the green card just because they married some ugly white guy who cannot even find a girlfriend back in the USA - sporting a fake accent, of course!

FYI, Lee Jiawei has been in Singapore since she was 14 years old.
I guess, even if anyone of you migrated to somewhere else, you'd still call Singapore your "hometown" wouldn't you? :x

Important thing is she helped us score a Silver under the Singapore flag! And she is damn proud of it, rightly so. I am proud of her and the team too.
(Did anyone of you see the resolute of the Chinese team? Good shot or bad shot, mostly steady, steady go-get-it expression. Firm and determined. But when Jia Wei hits a bad shot, her body language instantly becomes totally out of form and 'limp' already. One shot, she even bend over totally, almost touch the floor. Ha, VERY MUCH like Singaporean girls!!! Just look at amateurs playing pool or other games. Missed a shot, a lot of 小动作! Jia Wei too long in Singapore already lah... kenna local bad habits. Perhaps if she can become as steely and determined as Yining, we may have a shot at GOLD the next time)!
GO TEAM SINGAPORE!

Pointing out the fact that any hokkien guys/gers will tell you they are deng lang is indeed very accurate, it was a good point. However, you are also rite when u say that the question is which race.. not which nationality. And the standard of hokkien in singapore does not allow for too indepth description... ask any hokkien what race is the German, australian, russian.. and they will tell u angmoh.
the sentiment is this. Li Jiawei made a choice. Her choice was to become a Singaporean, play table tennis for Singapore and that she did, winning our glorious medal. And it wasnt easy i might add, going into the final, facing the China Team, under the scrutinizing eyes of the China crowds. But she stuck to that choice and she gave her best as u mentioned, so for that, i feel proud too. i am not anti-foreign talent, but i am pro-local talent, but nonetheless, a win is still a win and we rightly deserve it in all sense, so since she stuck to the choice, it is really not appropriate to say she is a zhong guo ren.. Especially after waving the Singapore flag high..

I don't think its wrong for her to say she's 北京人 and a 中国人. Our grandfather came from China to settle in Singapore and they called themselves 中国人 as well. If someday I happened to migrate oversea and people asked me what nationality am I. Instinctively I will say Iam Singaporean because that's where I am born. I can't stand ex Singaporeans who said they are American citizens given the first opportunity you asked that question. Like that stupid "American citizen" who insulted the judges and police, keep writting the fact that how great USA is. Phew to that "American citizen"

What is the big deal? I mean, it is a fact. I'd rather she say this than say she is a Singaporean - it might come across as hypocritical.
