WAGNER Tannhäuser: Overture and Bacchanale
BRUCH Concerto for Clarinet and Viola in E minor, Op. 88
BRAHMS Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 68
Max Bruch’s Concerto for Clarinet and Viola, though not as widely known as his First Violin Concerto, is a work of great beauty, and perfectly matched to the autumnal sound colours of the clarinet and viola. It was probably a combination of Brahms’ fastidiousness and his insecurity at being dubbed “Beethoven’s successor” that caused him to take 14 years to produce his First Symphony. (In any case, it became nicknamed “Beethoven’s Tenth”, much to his annoyance. The evening opens in true dramatic fashion with the popular Overture and Bacchanale from Tannhäuser.
