Schools join fight against dengue
By Hoe Yeen Nie, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 26 June 2007 2122 hrs

SINGAPORE: Schools, especially those located near dengue hotspots, are joining the fight against dengue.

The fogging of classrooms has doubled to twice a month at Tanglin Secondary School, while staff at Qiaonan Primary in Tampines are making doubly sure the Aedes mosquito has no place to hide.

For these schools, being located near dengue hotspots means extra care needs to be taken.

At Qiaonan Primary, eight out of 10 students live in reported dengue clusters.

Violet Khor, Principal, Qiaonan Primary School, said: "If the parents should report that the child has dengue fever, we will advise the parents on... what to do.

"My teachers will then follow up with the parents daily to find out the condition of the pupils. We will also then keep MOE informed if there are cases of dengue fever."

At Tanglin Secondary, one student came down with the disease over the June holidays.

Karen Oei, Principal, Tanglin Secondary School, said: "It happened during the school holidays when he was at home. So he didn't get it in school. We only found out last week.

"But he explained to us that he didn't get a serious attack. It was on and off and finally it was okay. But it was confirmed that he had a touch of dengue.

"We make sure the teachers, the form teachers in particular, keep tabs (on) whether students are taken ill or not." - CNA/yy
