Chinese man to hang for ant scam

A Chinese company chairman has been sentenced to death for running a scam involving giant ants.

Wang Zhendong promised investors returns of up to 60% if they put money into the fictitious ant-breeding project, the court heard.

Wang, from Liaoning province, raised 3bn yuan ($390m; £200m) in three years, prosecutors said.

The ants are used in traditional medicines and remedies in parts of China.

Fifteen other staff members were fined and given jail terms of between five and 10 years.

More than 10,000 investors signed 100,000 contracts with the company before the case was investigated in June 2005, Xinhua news agency reported.

Only 10m yuan was recovered before the case was brought to court, it said.

One investor committed suicide after realising he had been duped, according to the court.

Wang's actions also caused huge economic losses for investors and many subsequently suffered from depression, it added.

MLM is all over the world...so are con artists..

It's just a pity we dun get to hang conmen here...and govt allow them to set up companies on the pretence of MLM and close them down after they have sucked enough of your money...only to open another one to recruit new victims.

I would like to bring to those who have intentions to go into investments, partnerships in any business or into Network Marketing that due diligence (background research of company and shareholders/directors/owners of the business) is a very important process to go through to avoid being scammed, conned or getting into a very bad deal.

By investing a very small amount ($5-10) to check on the backgrounds and a bit of time to visit & observe the persons/company, you'll save yourself lots of trouble and pain at a later stage. It's pretty much easy from the ACRA business registration records to see if it's an empty shell company or the person(s) has less than trust-worthy record.

As in any investments, it's not wise to pour in the money when you're worked up with hype & enthusiasm. Take time to calm down, analyse the situation and conduct due diligence before considering whether is it beneficial to take any position.

If there are any offers or proposals which sound or seem it's too good to be true, trust your instincts to take the more conservative stand and check it out first. Most times, it turns out to be true or not what it seems to be as presented.

It doesn't apply to the MLM industry only. It's applies to any and all businesses.

Yet there are people who are seeking easy ways to make money. They want zero investment but huge payouts. Even if you go and work for people, you still have to invest first - buy working clothes, buy ez link card, have money for lunch BEFORE you get your first month's pay.

Tell me, where in the world can you find a biz whereby you need not come out a single cent? If anyone tells u that, then he/she is asking you for referrals and giving you a cut bah. Not that great a cut even.
