FIRST there was calm. Then a loud bang.
The usually quiet Pandan Loop factory area was jolted when a 10m-long crane toppled on its side yesterday afternoon.
The crane operator, a Chinese man in his 40s, sustained shoulder injuries and was rushed to the National University Hospital after being rescued by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).
His injuries would have been more severe if not for quick-thinking fellow-workers and other workers in neighbouring areas who swiftly called for the ambulance after the accident.
Recalled a Mr Tan, who works in the ice cream distribution company next to the site of the accident: 'I heard a very loud bang. I came out and was shocked to see the crane had fallen sideways.
'I noticed immediately that there was a pair of legs sticking out from the operator's cabin. I immediately called the ambulance. I was very worried about the man.
'I wanted him to be safe. I saw the workers around him calming him down while waiting for help.'
SHOULDER INJURIES
The SCDF spokesman said they received a call after 4pm and arrived at the site and found a male Chinese man in a state of shock and pain stuck in the operator's cabin of the crane.
The crane had fallen in such a way that the operator's cabin was right on top.
He added: 'After establishing that the crane was in a stable condition, we lifted the injured man out.
'The man, who was conscious, sustained some injuries on his shoulder and was rushed to the National University Hospital.'
Said Mr Tan: 'The site has been vacant for two months. Only yesterday, the workers came in and started loading goods and this had to happen.'
Mr Tan, who has been working at the ice cream distribution company for nine years, added: 'Nothing like this has ever happened here before. And I hope this is the last.'
