Savour Old Hong Kong
Nestled amidst the once sleepy Katong enclave, now abuzz with food options galore, one eatery stands out not only for its imposing presence operating out of a converted police station, but also for the mind-boggling number of dishes it offers.
Old Hong Kong is a teahouse concept eatery, opened since August 2006 by Ms Victoria Li, a Hong Konger who wanted to bring her country's cha chan teng culture to Singapore.
In true cha chan teng fashion, Old Hong Kong's menu features pages upon pages of selections ranging from Rice dishes to noodles; steaks; congee; dim sum; beverages and desserts - all typical Hong Kong-style.
Trust me, placing an order for a table of five, like what I had to do on my first visit took an arduous 15 minutes. (Imagine, it is not rare for a typical Hong Kong teahouse menu to consist of 500 dishes!)
Curry Trolley Noodles
Not too adventurous, yet still curious to try something different, we finally selected a few dishes like the Beef Brisket Hor Fun, Chicken Chop with Curry Rice, La Mian with Chicken Cutlet, Pan-fried Chee Cheong Fun and a highlight of Old Hong Kong's menu - the Trolley Noodles.
Old Hong Kong Trolley Noodles
Trolley Noodle is a yummy and affordable Hong Kong hawker fare dating back more than half a decade. In the past, noodle sellers sold their noodles from carts or trolleys along the streets and the diner can freely choose ingredients such as Beef Brisket Curry Fish Balls, Curry Squid, Pig Intestine and other toppings to complement the noodles, which is served in broth.
I opted for the Curry Sauce Trolley La Mian (you can also choose other types of noodles) with braised beancurd and vegetables. The sauce was not overtly spicy but was a little too starchy when mixed with the thick La Mian. Nevertheless, it was rather flavourful and filling enough for a meal in itself.
At the Katong branch, Old Hong Kong only has curry sauce for its Trolley Noodles, but at their new counter at the Marina Square Food Loft, Old Hong Kong recently launched what is believed to be the first trolley noodle choose-at-will counter in Singapore.
There, you can choose a variety of pre-marinated and pre-cooked toppings for your trolley noodles as well as add your own sauce from a mix of six different sauces imported from Hong Kong (Beef Brisket Sauce, Curry Sauce, Hong Kong Satay Sauce, Spicy Sauce, Sweet Sauce, Teahouse Spicy Sauce Extra).

We also had to try their signature Hong Kong Milk Tea, which Old Hong Kong proudly claims to be made from five different tea leaves, filtered water and evaporated milk imported from Hong Kong. The milk was from a "Black & White" brand, that I saw on the racks at the brewing station, but I didn't manage to catch a glimpse of whether the tea was really sieved through silk stockings, as how it's famously done in Hong Kong.
You can also try the Perfect Match (Yuan Yang), where tea and coffee are mixed together in one drink.
The hot beverages come served in a stainless steel mug that reminds me of those used by the Vikings.
Old Hong Kong is located at:
Katong Village (open 24 hours) and at Marina Square Food Loft #04-101/102 (open 10am - 10pm daily).
Prices at Old Hong Kong Express (the food court outlet) are slightly cheaper than at the main teahouse, ranging from S$1.30 for a cup of Hong Kong Milk tea to S$4.00 for a bowl of Trolley Noodles and S$5.80 for Baked Rice with Chicken Chop.
But for a fuller selection of dishes, as well as to experience dining in an environment recreated to resemble an old Hong Kong teahouse, visit their Katong main outlet instead.
