THE last time she spoke to her son, he swore at her over the phone.
But she still believes that Steven Wright, 48, may be innocent. The forklift driver was charged last Friday with the murders of five prostitutes in Ipswich, UK.

Madam Patricia Wright, 67, told News Of The World that her second of four children was always the apple of her eye: 'Steve was shy - especially in a crowd.'

The family lived on Royal Air Force (RAF) bases across the world, including Malta and Singapore, as Wright's father Conrad was an RAF corporal.

Madam Wright, a retired veterinary nurse, recalled: '(Steve) loved animals. One time in Singapore he and his brother brought home a snake. Then it was a turtle and then a puppy from the beach.

'I never saw any violence there. He definitely didn't have it in him when he was a little boy.'

But the marriage became increasingly violent.

She said: 'Steve was withdrawn. He was afraid of his strict dad if I wasn't there. He would actually hold his breath and pass out if he thought his dad was going to smack him.'

After the family finally returned to Suffolk, Madam Wright wanted to leave with the children - Wright was then a teenager - but claims their father told her: 'You're not getting the boys.'

MESSY DIVORCE

She claims that Wright's father had 'poisoned' the children against her and that she wasn't allowed to visit them. Madam Wright then moved to the US, remarried and didn't see any of her children again for more than 15 years.

In 1992, she was reunited with the twice-married Wright during Christmas.

At first, they got on fine but mother and son fell out towards the end of her visit. She said: 'When I got home he left this terrible message on my phone. He was drunk and I could hardly understand very much. It was F this and F that.

'If he could say those terrible things, he obviously didn't want anything to do with me.'

According to his mum, Wright never had problems getting girlfriends. She said: 'He always seemed very nice to them. But he never seemed able to stay with one woman.'

However, she's convinced her son is not a serial killer: 'Steve's had a rotten life but he doesn't go around killing people. I don't believe he would do that. He was never cruel. '

The naked bodies of Gemma Adams, 25, Tania Nicol, 19, Anneli Alderton, 24, Annette Nicholls, 29, and Paula Clennell, 24, were found on the outskirts of Ipswich. At least one of them had been strangled.
