SINGAPORE: The Osim Singapore Triathlon this year saw a record 3,800 participants gathering at the East Coast Park on Sunday.
Australian Courtney Atkinson emerged champion in the Elite Men's Category, while Japanese Shizuka Kutsana beat favourites to come out tops in the women's event.
Atkinson was the first out of a gruelling 1.5km swim in the open sea and he continued his lead into the next stage, cycling 40km.
After completing a 10km run, he crossed the finishing line in a time of one hour, 50 minutes and 16 seconds.
The 27-year-old said: "It's my first race after a few months so it was like blowing out all the cobwebs. I am very excited with how I went. It was a great race."
For Kutsana, she managed to win the race in two hours, six minutes and 43 seconds after failing twice to garner the grand prize.
This year, safety was a priority after the untimely deaths of some athletes.
More medical personnel and equipment like defibrillators were brought in. Even mist fans were installed to ensure that competitors kept their cool under the heat.
