Cup Ryanair faces inquiry over adverts which 'repeatedly misled' travellers

Ryanair: The company is facing an Office of Fair Trading inquiry

Ryanair faces an Office of Fair Trading inquiry over claims it has repeatedly misled travellers.

The Advertising Standards Authority turned to the OFT after the budget airline ignored its calls to end misleading promotions.

The ASA has repeatedly clashed with Ryanair chief executive Michael O'Leary, who has called its chiefs a "bunch of dimwits".

This is the first time the ASA has referred such a household name to the OFT.

It says the airline has repeatedly broken the advertising code with "misleading and unfair comparisons".

Ryanair is accused of exaggerating the availability of low price flights, advertising prices without taxes and charges, making misleading and denigratory comparisons with competitors and not clearly stating restrictions on offers.

The OFT can seek an injunction on Ryanair not to run misleading claims and if ignored that could lead to fines and a court appearance for Mr O'Leary to justify the firm's refusal to follow ASA rulings.

But Ryanair has also complained to the OFT. A spokesman accused the ASA of "bias and incompetence".
