Since Loukezxv asked about reversed cards in another thread, I thought I'd write something on this.
Reversed cards are read as a reversed meaning.
When a card reversed it would indicate a "blockage" to the meaning of the cards. Sometimes this means the exact opposite of what the upright card means. At other times, it could suggest that the card's normal interpretation is slightly different.
For court cards, where personality and characteristics play an important role, the reversed interpretation often points to the negative qualities held in these personalities. Alternatively, the reversed court card can show a deficiency in the more positive characteristics of the card.
If you understood my post on
The Minor Arcana, you would know that I see court cards as being an elemental application of the element of the suit. The reversed of that court card would then mean a disharmony between those two elements.
E.g. The knight of swords would represent the "fire" of "air". In layman terms, that would mean "action" based on "thoughts"/"intellect". When reversed, it would mean that those actions are not in line with thoughts. The querent may be thinking one thing, and doing another.
Another important point that I use with reversals is when a non-court minor arcana or a major arcana appears reversed. In this case, I take it to mean that the lesson of the previous card is not understood yet. When an ace appears reversed, I look to the ten of that suit and tell the querent the lesson of the ten. The one exception to this are the fives, which are more positive when reversed. In this case, I refer to the lesson of the four when the five appears upright. (This technique was suggested by Paul Fenton-Smith, which I drew most of my learnings from.)
An example of this would be to look at the Star reversed. When upright, the Star represents hope, creativity, and faith. Therefore, the revresed would imply that hope, creativity and faith are not acknowledged by the querent. The lesson then would be to look at the Tower upright which suggests the querent needs to get out of the situation she is in before she can find hope in her life.
