Default Rejected By Vet For Treatment

I have sent the below to a few forums and papers. Please assist. Thank you.

===== =====

On 26 November 2007 at approximately 2010hrs, I reached home from work. I went to my room, only to find that my cat was bleeding and that my room was covered in splotches of blood and vomit, with some even on my bed.

My initial reaction was that of panic and after calming down, I found out that my cat was bleeding from his nether regions. Upon consulting my mother, I went to The Animal Clinic Pte Ltd located at Clementi, in hopes that they would assist me in locating the problem.

I reached the clinic at approximately 2030hrs. Naturally, because my cat required emergency treatment, I went up to the counter to ask if my cat could receive treatment first as he was bleeding right through the towel I had bundled him in.

I was a familiar with the staff members of this particular clinic because my mother used to work here and I recognized the people who were on duty that night. I explained the circumstances to them and said that my cat was bleeding from his nether regions. Aida, one of the staff members, questioned whether the cat was my own or my mother's. I answered to the former. She then said that she would need to ask Dr Lennie Lee on whether they could take in my cat. I agreed, because they may have been short-handed and the relevant personnel might not be in.

Aida left to call the doctor and I waited with two others who were waiting for treatment as well. A few minutes later, she came back and said that they could not take my cat in "because I was a family member of (my mother)". To say that I was shocked would been an understatement. I said that the cat would be registered and paid for under my name. However, she repeated that they could not take my cat in because "Dr Lee said (the above)". The other two pet owners cut in and asked if anyone could see my cat and stop the bleeding at least. Aida refused and repeated the reason stated above. She recommended that I visit Mount Pleasant at Whitley Road instead.

At any rate, despite my protests that my cat required emergency treatment, I was shown the door and had to take a taxi towards Mount Pleasant. There, once I arrived at approximately 2100hrs, I was given immediate emergency treatment by the male staff member there. My cat's bleeding was finally revealed as a urinary tract infection and after a series of a tests, it was revealed that my cat had kidney failure and was hospitalized overnight.

Now, I am not sure if vets do take the Hippocratic Oath at all, but as a doctor, are they supposed to turn away patients with superficial reasons such as the one quoted above? Is the welfare of the patient involved (no matter the species) not the highest priority?

All the "help" I received from The Animal Clinic amounted to a small scrap of paper with Mount Pleasant's address and telephone number.

I want an explanation for the service I received in The Animal Clinic.

To make matters worse, please look at the AVA reply to my concerns.

this is too much la.

your cat was BLEEDING for goodnes sakes!!

couldn't ANYONE stop the bleeding first?

it's like telling someone near the verge of death to visit another hospital to receive treatment

being a Doctor or a VET,

other's lives are more impt.

ALSO,

u stated that the other pet owners told the staff to look at your cat first right?

since the other pets owners are not COMPLAINING, there's no reason to not treat your cat!

i'm so disappointed.

a very good letter to AVA.

post their reply too when u received it ya?

WTF? What has Singapore become? Corrupted that's what! What's wrong with giving treatment. Stop bleeding can die arr?

And besides that letter states that the "Doctor" Lee only asked the MOTHER to not send HER pets here and she had said that the pet is the DAUGHTER's!

Be persistant. Whack their faces till you get compensation out of it.

First, go look for some PROFESSIONAL VETs, seek their advice. The vet who attended to your pet at Mount Pleasant can help. Get him to prove that your pet is already in critical condition.

Then, write back to AVA with proof. Insist that they didn't attend to your cat's bleeding despite it being rather serious. Ask them whether doing so is within a vet's code of conduct.

I feel that writing back ain't good, 'cos you will be more unable to express your feeling and unhappiness towards the issue. Plus you have to wait for DAYS for it to be delivered to AVA and for AVA to deliver the letter back to you.

I suggest speaking face to face with one of the 'customer service officers', if there is any.

Good luck

Its so terrible for the nurses to refuse treatment to your cat. Maybe it's because it was quite late already, & they felt lazy & wanted to knock off a bit early? Still, its no reason not to treat your cat. Its almost animal cruelty. How can a vet not treat an animal when the animal is obviously in serious need of treatment? So terrible of the nurse. She should have brought the cat to the vet immediately after seeing the cat bleed so profusely.

Althou I'm a dog person, its just so wrong of the people at the clinic. In what way is bleeding profusely not an emergency case? Haiz, the nurse & the vet have no heart. Because of bias-ness against your mother/family, the vet did not want to treat your cat. He don't know how to use his brain & think?

Anyway, I hope your cat gets well soon. =>

I can feel your anger.

I was more lucky with my guinea pig. He too, have a organ failure, only lasted a few hours more when he gets the glucose injection at the vet. ... I still felt his heart beat when my mother woke me up in the next morning... But... After my mother changed clothing in order to go visit the vet again... It stopped...

It lived for about seven years, and that's good enough.

Hope your cat gets well soon.

My cat's okay now, but I'm the one who's still angry. LOL. He doesn't know a thing aside from how I abandoned him to the doctors at Mt Pleasant for three days... And he wasn't very happy when I came back to collect him even though I visited everyday while he was there. =(

I don't feel that just the right to choose patients is enough to cover his excuse for refusing me. Ethically speaking, he should have told the nurse to just do the emergency treatment, ask me to pay and refer me to the next clinic. That's the way I felt things should have gone.

I just hope people boycott the clinic from now on. They deserve it.
