SYNOPSIS
Raqs Sharqi, otherwise called Middle Eastern Dance or Oriental Dance, is more commonly known as the Belly Dance. The Belly Dance has its origin in one of the oldest social dances in history. There are two forms of Belly Dancing. The Raqs Baladi is a social dance performed during celebrative occasions, such as weddings, birthday gatherings. The Raqs Sharqi, the theatrical version of Belly Dancing, encompasses a colourful culture of costumes, music, movements and technique.
Ms Susanna Lawren is a freelance dance instructress committed to promoting the Raqs Sharqi as an art form. Since 2002, Ms Lawren has been schooling students in the art form of Raqs Sharqi. She works with various community clubs to introduce this dance form to the masses. It is timely now to showcase her students’ work in a theatre performance. The event is scheduled on 29th April 2008, 8-10 pm, at the Victoria Theatre.
Ms Melina, a renowned dancer, will grace the occasion as the guest performer. Ms Melina is also one of the co founder of the world renown bellydance Company, Daughters of Rhea (
www.daughtersofrhea.com ). With her first stage bellydanced at age 2 and had performed with a tray of burning candles on her head at age 7, at the moment she is the only bellydancer in the world to Balance a Sword on a Dagger clutched in her jaw.
